It's actually a tradition. I suspect most of them are getting paid in some way -- meals, travel, lodging, class credit hours, and promise of a job if they win. Even interns for losers will usually benefit.

But, I guess they could sit at home while other interns get the experience.

ILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday offered some support for a proposal in the Senate that would raise the federal minimum wage to $12 an hour, hinting that the higher rate sought by labor unions doesn't have enough support.

Congressional Democratic leaders have backed legislation sponsored by Washington Sen. Patty Murray that would increase the rate to $12 an hour by 2020, which is several dollars less than the $15 backed by labor and anti-poverty activists.

"Whatever (Murray) advocates I pay a lot of attention to, because she knows how to get it through the Congress," Clinton said after meeting with labor leaders on Thursday. "Let's not just do it for the sake of having a higher number out there, but let's actually get behind a proposal that has a chance of succeeding."

is hardly conclusive. Fact is, $12 is going to be tough, but she's got a better chance of getting something through than Sanders.

While interns are usually glad to get experience, without compensation, many college students cannot afford to intern because they have to work. Unpaid internships therefore give a leg up to those who already started out privileged and have parents who can support their unpaid "great experience" while those who cannot afford to work for free are disadvantaged. I work at a law firm that has actually brought a lot of cases against corporations that did not pay their interns, and I feel really strongly about this. I did not know that Bernie paid his interns (that is pretty unheard of for political campaigns) but I am very glad to hear that. It cements my support for him even more.

An experience that only those with affluent parents or a trust fund will ever get to experience, unless they do it for Sanders that will allow those that need money to live on get such experience, and who can't just live in a box on the sidewalk until the election is over..

Sorry, I disagree with your criticism. Personally, I'm fine with paying interns. But, I don't think it is necessary and the best use of campaign money. People going to college, getting out of some classwork to intern with a campaign, is not a major burden on their finances, and it's one hell of an investment. With that said, I'm fine with them being paid too.

I have volunteered many times. But an internship is different from just volunteering. When I volunteer for a candidate, I do so on my time when I can make it. When I interned for Dean in 2004, I was much more like an employee - I was required to be there certain (very long) hours, and I had a supervisor who assigned me different tasks and told me when I could leave for the night. Not that I was forced to stay, but it was the expectation. Also, almost all of the work I did was gruntwork, not "great experience" (although the paid staff did a lot of gruntwork too, so I can't complain about that). I have nothing against volunteering and I recognize that most campaigns don't pay interns, but I think it's cool that Bernie is.

That is no financial burden on the intern that is not payed. In his defense he says he doesn't "oppose" paying interns and that is OK too.

Evidently Sanders interns don't have to demand a salary. The job comes with one and with fringe benefits of working for a great candidate. You get paid and you have the chance of a life-time.
