In an effort to refute what they say is a false narrative that union voters are closely split between Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Hillary Clinton, a group of more than 20 unions representing more than 10 million workers is releasing a statement on Monday reaffirming support for Mrs. Clinton.
Secretary Clinton has proven herself as the fighter and champion working people and their families need in the White House, the statement says. That is why, of all unions endorsing a candidate in the Democratic primary, the vast majority of the membership in these unions has endorsed her.

Then I'll believe it.

(27,247 posts)And that's with a vote from the membership, not the fatcats at the top.
If I were a union member, I'd vote for the guy who actually joined a picket line.
I have a family member who belongs to a union-- she is a big Bernie supporter.

(8,702 posts)I find it interesting that Lee Saunders would say this:
I do believe it would not be beneficial to push the issue, said Lee Saunders, president of the 1.6-million member American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Workers (AFSCME), which has also endorsed Mrs. Clinton and was part of the joint statement."
Since my state employees union, WFSE, a member of AFSCME, endorsed Bernie Sanders. We were not the only one to do so.
My brothers and sisters here in Washington state support Bernie Sanders.

(819 posts)Leadership endorses, members did not. This was concern during their convention -- to not endorse early, but they did any way.
This gives illusion Hillary is supported by members as talking point or to boast she is endorsed by large groups. Laborers see her for what she is. She will sell us out.

And be married to the guy who gutted the middle class by inducting China into the WTO and NAFTA?

(4,961 posts)I'm done with her and her and the political and union elite she stands with.
I'll stand with the workers, the middle class and work to create a party that represents us. If Hillary wins the nom she destroys the FDR Democratic Party for a very long time.

(28,979 posts)They didn't bother to ask the rank and file how we felt. On this issue, my union does not "represent" me.

(4,532 posts)The system bullies unions into endorsing the establishment candidate (Clinton). I worked for a friend who was running for delegate. He was running to be a Bernie delegate to the convention. He worked for District1199c, a healthcare workers union in Philly, as an activist and organizer. His union president is a Bernie Sanders supporter, strongly in fact, but he chose to endorse Hillary. Why? Not because he supported her, but because he was bullied into it by the fear that he would lose delegates. In 2008, the union got creamed by the loss of delegates after the president made an honest endorsement, he endorsed Obama, whom he actually believed in. 90% of the time, unions are scared into endorsing the establishment candidate.
