In a Black Church in South Carolina, Bernie Sanders Struggles to Get an ‘Amen’

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — The problem began as soon as Bernie Sanders walked into the dining room of the revered and predominantly black Brookland Baptist Church here. Instead of flocking to him, as supporters do at his large college rallies, many of the church’s 780 members present looked up for a moment, then quietly went back to eating their Sunday feast — unmoved as Mr. Sanders, the senator from Vermont, tried to work the room.

Mr. Sanders delivered remarks at a microphone next to a buffet table offering chicken, collard greens and dinner rolls.

“We have, in America today, a broken criminal justice system,” Mr. Sanders said at the microphone, pausing briefly after this line from his stump speech, which is usually met with applause. Here it garnered very little, and the line for the food kept moving. Brookland Baptist Church proved a tough crowd.

His visit here underscored Mr. Sanders’s challenge in strengthening his support among black voters in South Carolina, where the majority of Democrats casting a ballot in the state’s primary on Saturday will be black and where his rival for the presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton, seems to be holding on to a sizable lead.

These were church going people at a function. A proud group who weren't about to stop what they were doing and get ready to shout, as in a rally. IOW... he had to WIN their attention.

I saw him do that. Did that send a turd the wrong way?

are very familiar with the Clinton name brand.

The antendee also said both platforms sound similar (remember HRC morphed her campaign into Sanders' populist message).

Jackson said he's still an undecided primary voter, adding that he may not reach a final decision until he enters the voting booth next Saturday.

Right now he sees Sanders and Clinton as possessing a similar record on African-American issues.

"In my limited view of things, I've assessed that they're pretty much on the same wavelength with it. I think the two of them are saying what needs to be said -- of course that's politics -- but based on their record, I think the two of them have shown some substantial evidence that they are interested and they are concerned with racial equality," he said.

Jackson added that he thought most of the people in the room knew who Sanders was, though he conceded that Clinton "would be the more popular face, the more familiar name" if she were to walk in.

Think of it as the same familiarity as Band-aid, Kool-aid and Preparation-H.

But that Rubio voter will probably drop Rubio for Bernie, she was very excited and said Amen.
