2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA sure thing that Trump will be the Republican nominee? Maybe, if he makes one last deal.
Establishment endorsements and donations are pouring in for Rubio. He should be the formally crowned Republican Establishment candidate in the next week or two.
What if Trump waited for a few more victories and then sent the Establishment a message: Call the dogs off or: 1) I'll become the Republican nominee anyway; or if that doesn't happen, 2) I'll run as an independent and your new president will be Bernie or Hillary.
Trump has said that he would not run as an independent. But in Trump's world, pledges are smedges. And will his supporters really care if he runs as a Republican or an independent, just so long as they think he can win?

(697 posts)I've thought he might contact the powers that be and say that for a nice tidy sum he would concede at the convention for the good of the party and for a promise to not run as an Independent candidate.
Don't know how such could be legally funded, but to take a fall on the Republican nomination has to be worth some serious coin to certain people. And it may be that, for all the talk, there isn't as much money currently in the bank as is implied.
