Mark Halperin:Clinton & Trump are now both positioned to possibly lock up nominations in 3 weeks

Clinton, Trump Now on Parallel Glide Paths to Nomination:

Only suckers bet on presidential politics or professional wrestling, especially in this most tumultuous campaign cycle in recent memory. But if you were playing the odds, you would have to say that the weekend’s electoral results have, for now, put Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in extraordinarily commanding positions to become their parties’ de facto nominees as early as mid-March.

The two New Yorkers arrived here by different routes. For Clinton, her solid victory over Bernie Sanders in Saturday’s caucuses in Nevada provided a circuit breaker on her rival’s weeks-long run of momentum, punctuated by his landslide win in the New Hampshire primary.

Such is the inexorable power of the expectations game in determining the meaning of election results that what would have, only a few weeks ago, been seen as a miraculous showing by Sanders in Nevada (losing to Clinton by just 5 points) is now a potentially candidacy-ending loss. The Vermont senator’s campaign compounded some bad luck with some bad judgment. First, after a long period without any credible polling in the Silver State, a CNN survey released three days before the caucuses showed the race effectively tied. Then, Sanders’ team made it clear to reporters that they were playing hard to win on Saturday and their body language suggested they thought they would prevail. Thus, Clinton’s victory was seen as a reassertion of her hold on non-white voters, seniors, and other elements of a majority coalition that can be replicated in almost every upcoming contest.

It is crude and irrational, but the impact of the CNN poll and Team Sanders’ misplaced display of confidence was to take the full measure of his momentum and transfer it to the former secretary of state in one fell swoop Saturday night. Now, Clinton has regained the Big Mo just in time for a three-week stretch after South Carolina and created a potential killing field for Sanders.

the support of a lot of young people, as did Hillary. I think it has something to do with the candidate's supporters. As a black wowan whose husband worked on the Obama campaign, it was a contested primary, but I don't recall the anger demonstrated this cycle. Personally I liked both candidates, and was proud as a member of the Democratic Party that we had two viable candidates. It's different now as one half of the party seems to be acting like the GOP party, in that if they can't win, they want to burn down the house, and destroy the party.

Think that kind of rhetoric is going to help if Clinton gets the nomination?

I had the same personal experience - I came in supporting Hillary but flipped to BHO in 08 and Bernie this time.

It was primary and it was rough at times, but the BHO supporters were a LOT more confident, focused on BHO and just generally positive in tone.

This go around this place is like a right wing attack site on HRC ... Bernie supporters here sound and act like the right wing loons I have to deal with at the gym.

The GOP is going to destroy her, and I won't be able to stop laughing. They have so much to work with. All I'll be thinking is I Told You So. If her supporters think the GOP is going to play nice they are sadly mistaken. They don't have the thick skin to survive. All it takes around here is to tell the truth that she is a liar and you get your post hidden. They can't handle the facts or truth, and the GOP are going to win in November.

I watch their Show on Bloomberg and their "Circus" on Showtime and their "All Due Respect Show" on MSNBC. They got much coverage for their book "Game Change" about Clinton vs. Obama and the follow up.

Bloomberg is for Hillary and both Mark and John got deals made because of their connections there. They did some good reporting on Bernie early on with their "All Due Respect" show when it was just on Bloomberg but they they got deals cut with MSNBC and Showtime...and turned Real Establishment.

Halperin was suspended from MSNBC when he said on "Morning Joe" awhile back that "Obama is a Dick." He has been suspended before from other outlets. His father Marty was a Dem and had the FBI investigating him for years with Hoover. Check it out on WIKI.

Mark seems to have "Dark Moods." John is more reasonable. I watch them (keeping in mind) the power and influence that are behind them these days. Given their recent deals that have had an effect on their reporting...I might be re-thinking how much I follow them, though. This latest from Mark...is WAY OTT.
