"When Bernie Sanders will need college students the most, they'll be watching Netflix and partying"

Bernie’s spring break blues
When Bernie Sanders will need college students the most, they'll be watching Netflix and partying.
By Darren Samuelsohn

Last August, Bernie Sanders packed 12,000 people into a pavilion at the University of Washington, while 3,000 more couldn’t fit and were stuck outside. Later in the fall, he won Western Illinois University’s mock presidential election by a landslide. Last week, his campaign opened a local office just off the Michigan State University campus, calling it a “beacon of hope” for its supporters.

But there’s just one problem for the surging senator: When primary or caucus day arrives in each of these college towns, as well as dozens more from Maine to Hawaii, many of the students Sanders hopes will help carry him to the White House won’t be there. They’ll be in Cancún. Or Florida. Or back home.

Call it Bernie’s Spring Break Blues.

This year’s spring break schedule clashes directly with a large swath of primaries and caucuses, a conflict that comes at the worst possible time for Sanders, who crushed his rival Hillary Clinton among young and first-time voters in the exit polls in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. The Democratic race is about to enter a four-week stretch where more than half of the party’s delegates will be awarded. But as the voting gets under way, one campus after another is closing down for weeklong breaks. In all, more than half a million college students from 14 states will be on spring break at the same time that the presidential campaign train chugs onto their campuses, according to a Politico analysis of the March 5 to March 26 primary and caucus states.

Fox News talking points here from Bernie people. The kind of stuff here shouldn't even be permitted. If one goes to the jury it is voted to let it stand. But anything negative for bernie is hiden.

I suppose it could make a difference, for sure. I'll have to look at some schedules to see if there are conflicts.

ETA: U of Minnesota spring break starts on March 7, so everyone will still be here on March 1 for our caucuses.

That will work wonders when you want them to come out and vote for you in the GE.

My son is a poli sci minor, wants to teach civics, and he doesn't know that he can vote for Clinton in the GE because of how she is treating his generation.

But, he, by all means, encourage them to continue being disenfranchised.

Hope that strategy of belittling young voters and telling women they are going to H-E-double hockey sticks if they don't vote for your candidate and calling Bernie supporters unicorn fart sniffers will work for you if your candidate is in a General Election with negative likeability and trustworthiness numbers.

FYI: the whole "Netflix and chill" meme has been played out and almost caustic at this point when attempting to relate to younger people.

We come out in support of Bernie, we get slammed for being idealistic and not laying down and letting the machine run us over.

We stay home, we're accused of not caring about the political process.

Seems the only correct choice to you people is to support the most corrupt candidate since George freakin' Bush.

time for frivolity, and they don;t think voting for someone they believe have their interests at heart is a frivolous matter.

You well to do (sorry I know you prefer to be called the middle class) naysayers are already financially comfortable and likely can afford to help your kids with college and beyond.

The rest of us don't see the future as a joke like you appear to, and our kids think Hilary will leave them the options of either lifelong debt and flipping burgers or blood-letting cannon fodder for her neocon agenda.

They see Sanders and actually believe him to be an honest man (as does most everyone else) that will at least help them as he can, when he can, if elected while enabling them to fight for a better future than the rich and untrustworthy candidates have in mind for them.

They run in different social circles than you and know hardship and that it will take a long fight to evade further such hardship in their future, and they really do believe in him, what he stands for, and that he won't forget them once they help him get elected.

This will surprise you and your Cancun set, but the working class younger people are most sincere and diligent in both their beliefs and intentions to act on them (including voting).

You just can't see it because trust fund babies tend to be lazy and lacking in direction or believe that their actions and inaction's have no consequences. Such coddled financially comfortable youth suffer affluenza in varying degrees depending on how well to do their parents are, I believe you are relating truthfully the way those you know may act, but I have news for you, the majority of the young people these days are either poor or just getting by and I know them far better it appears than you ever will.
