I have one word for the defeatists: NUTS

I haven't posted here in years, literally, but the rampant defeatism of some posters has to stop.

General Sherman lost battles. In fact, early in the Civil War, he had a meltdown of epic proportions. It didn't mean he wasn't a brilliant general and, in the end, a key reason that the Union defeated the Confederacy.

General Grant lost some battles but won the war.

Lincoln had many setbacks.

Do you think things were easy for FDR? HELL he had an actual conspiracy out to overthrow him.

We got our asses kicked at Pearl Harbor. And we won the war.

When our troops were surrounded at the Battle of the Bulge, what did their commander say when asked to surrender?

He said NUTS.

Stop the defeatism. FIGHT the Republicans with everything you have. The battle can be won, it WILL be won.

Debbie Downers.
If they were running for office, they would never win. They would suck all of the wind out of their campaign, with their negativity.

Do you regard the Republicans as your political enemies? Then why are some people giving them comfort by STILL whining about last week?

Obama made a mistake, it was a major one, sure. But dammit, he's won most of his battles, we still hold the high ground politically and organizationally.

Stop whining. Get on the phones. if you can't do that, make a freaking donation. Even $5. And if you can't do that, then at a minimum BUCK UP. No one benefits by fear but the Republicans.

Ask yourself....what would George Washington (who lost battles) do? Lincoln? Theodore Roosevelt? FDR? Truman? JFK? LBJ?

Fight. Fight these Republican bastards with everything we have.

Every moment of fear at this point is a bullet in the arsenal of the plutocrats.

Fear is the mind-killer. LET LAST WEEK GO.

I think I'm just tired. I've been phonebanking all week, and yesterday only two people came out, and Monday we were nearly half of usual, and people are just getting TIRED.

We have 26 days to go, and I'm really struggling to keep fighting.

I come to DU looking for encouragement, and sometimes it's just not here.

I'm not a marathoner. I run out of steam. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

You're in the trenches....you're exhausted.

I've experienced the fear, too...I'm not saying i haven't. But we cannot let it control us.

Remember, we knew that this was going to be a tough battle. Think about how bad things looked a year ago. Even with the problems of the last week, we are still in a better position right now than many thought possible.

Take a breath.

It's gonna be OK. We're going to win.

Battle of the Bulge

In December 1944, when the German army launched the surprise Battle of the Bulge, Major General Maxwell D. Taylor, commander of the 101st Airborne Division, was away, attending a staff conference in the United States. In Taylor's absence, acting command of the 101st and its attached troops fell to McAuliffe. At Bastogne, the 101st was besieged by a far larger force of Germans under the command of General Heinrich Freiherr von Lüttwitz.

On December 22, 1944, through a party consisting of a major, a lieutenant, and two enlisted men under a flag of truce that entered the American lines southeast of Bastogne (occupied by Company F, 2nd Battalion, 327th Glider Infantry), General von Lüttwitz sent the following ultimatum to Gen. McAuliffe:

To the U.S.A. Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne.
The fortune of war is changing. This time the U.S.A. forces in and near Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units. More German armored units have crossed the river Our near Ortheuville, have taken Marche and reached St. Hubert by passing through Hompre-Sibret-Tillet. Libramont is in German hands.

There is only one possibility to save the encircled U.S.A. troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town. In order to think it over a term of two hours will be granted beginning with the presentation of this note.

If this proposal should be rejected one German Artillery Corps and six heavy A. A. Battalions are ready to annihilate the U.S.A. troops in and near Bastogne. The order for firing will be given immediately after this two hours term.

All the serious civilian losses caused by this artillery fire would not correspond with the well-known American humanity.
The German Commander.

According to various accounts from those present, when McAuliffe was told of the German demand for surrender he said "nuts". At a loss for an official reply, Lt. Col. Harry Kinnard suggested that his first remark summed up the situation well, which was agreed to by the others. The official reply was typed and delivered by Colonel Joseph Harper, commanding the 327th Glider Infantry, to the German delegation. It was as follows:

To the German Commander.

NUTS!

The American Commander

Suffice it to say, the Germans were perplexed at the short reply
