As one of her first jobs out of law school, Hillary went to work for the Childrens Defense Fund. She traveled to prisons in South Carolina to investigate why African American teenagers were being jailed as adultsand her work helped to change federal law.

(24,615 posts)I missed that entirely, but it certainly has a ring of truth to it. I always thought she was a very forward thinker.

(7,160 posts)the one Senator Sanders voted for?

(26,549 posts)She was especially proud of those "tough on crime" provisions in her Senate campaign...that reversed the changes you highlighted in that OP.

(26,549 posts)Heck, the "superpredator" speech was Clinton talking about her efforts to get the bill passed.

(36,392 posts)Now there is a giant cavity where her soul used to be. That's what comes from planning for thirty five years to be the first female president, and from being part of the ruling class for forty five years.

(61,712 posts)Which is it?
Maybe the truth is that she's not as bad as some say.

(36,392 posts)was conservative. Maybe that's who told you. As a young lawyer she seems to have been altruistic to some extent. Then as a politician, she embraced welfare reform, the private prisons, TPP, for profit healthcare, charter schools, wall street deregulation, doma, dadt, the crime bill, the Iraq war, Syria, Honduras, Libya, Henry Kissinger, and social security cuts. Like I said - no soul.

(9,992 posts)Bill Clinton ran in 1992 on the campaign promise to end welfare as we know it. In 1996, he with the wholehearted support of Hillary succeeded, passing the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act (PRWORA). PRWORA was based on legislation first proposed by Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. The act was opposed by the left-wing of the Democratic Party, but the Clinton administration joined hands with Republicans and conservative Democrats to push it through.
As part of PRWORA, the Clinton administration axed the Aid to Families with Dependent Children federal assistance program, which had been created 61 years before by the Social Security Act, in the New Deal. They replaced it with the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which was drastically weaker and as the name stresses temporary.
Hillary, as First Lady, advocated strongly for the restructuring of welfare. Her former co-workers at CDF, on the other hand, were infuriated. CDF founder and President Marian Wright Edelman declared that President Clintons signature on this pernicious bill makes a mockery of his pledge not to hurt children.
