2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDid Barbara Boxer really just make the comment about the "whiteness" of Bernie's rallies?
I'm so disappointed in her.

(6,282 posts)My uncle in NH tells me that she had a rally in his town and wasn't pleased with the racial makeup of the crowd / backdrop, so their campaign staffers went across town and hired the Dominican apple pickers to attend the rally.

nothing more diverse than hillary's $500 fund-raiser the other night in s.c. ...................
hillary 'resorts' to selecting her "diverse crowd" based on $$$/$$$$/$$$$$/$$$$$$
walmart heir's six figure/$330k+ donation to hillary...........

(4,713 posts)It was at a fundraiser or something. The whiteness of Bernie's rallies isn't new people have been saying it since he launched his campaign.

Why else would they prefer Clinton over Sanders, amirite?

(46,436 posts)The issue is Barbara Boxer, who surely knows better given her years of working alongside Bernie Sanders in the Senate, using this talking point to go negative on him on race, of all things. You can't tell me that she doesn't know his record.
Build up your own candidate, don't tear the other one down, especially when you're tearing him down based on a false premise.

(4,775 posts)She's good on identity politics issues, not a reliable supporter when it comes to taking on powerful economic interests. She is retiring, so though I am not a huge fan, chances are we'll soon have someone worse. But my feeling is that she has been in D.C. too long and is beholden to the same corrupt interests most all of them are.

(22,913 posts)Boxer said she was looking at some of the recent Bernie Sanders rallies and that she hasn't seen that many white voters since the Oscars. It did not go over very well and she tried to deflect attention from the reaction to saying "Oh, I see you've seen the Oscars" or something to that effect.
It was a cheap shot that saddened me, and the reason why it saddened me is because commentary about nearly all white audiences is something that Democrats usually apply to Republican audiences, with the implicit criticism that Republicans have little interest in attracting minorities or pursuing policies that may benefit them. That can not be said about Bernie Sanders and Boxer knows it, so it really is a low blow to use that type of smirking comment against him. There were plenty of minority voters at events Sanders held in South Carolina (he was there tonight) even if Hillary draws more. Not so many in Tulsa Oklahoma true, but they are having a Democratic primary there soon and no one has called for a boycott of Oklahoma because few minorities live there.

(4,974 posts)The Democratic Party is doomed by these tactics. As a life-long Democrat who believed I could work within the party to make it more progressive and supportive of my values, I am done with it.
I will no longer feel responsible for propping these people up by my vote. I no longer give a damn about the lesser of two evils. I will continue to work ONLY for the candidates that I truly believe represent me. My vote is no longer available to the party. It is only available to those politicians in or out of the Democratic Party that I believe in. The rest of the politicians and the Democratic Party as a party are on their own. And they can thank Hillary Clinton if they win and they can thank Hillary Clinton if they lose.

(46,436 posts)She has always been one of my favorites, but this is sad. As I said above, I have no problem with Barbara or anyone else supporting Hillary if they feel she's the best candidate, but to deliver such an unfair low blow to Sanders, who she KNOWS supports civil rights and AA issues, tarnishes her reputation with me.

(14,249 posts)DUers have NO problem identifying blacks by race over and over. And I can't count the number of posts that have referred to the number of African Americans at a Bernie event in order to prove that black people are "feeling the BERN?!"
But refer to white people as "white" and some folks lose their minds. Because, as we know, white people are just "people," so referring to their race is RACIST!
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)and leave the whole race thing out of it, but it wasn't Bernie Sanders that first brought race into the equation.

(4,775 posts)Thanks, excellent point. California will be a tough place to win without corporate money, our Senate races bring in millions in corporate donations. But I will check out Steve Stokes for sure. I really think there's nothing more important than electing candidates without corporate money, and shaming politicians who take it.

(18 posts)Who is coordinating all these surrogates attacks on Sanders? Do they realize that Sander's supporters are DEMOCRATS too. I like Boxer but this was a low blow. Also, really made me feel sad to hear one of my favorites Al Franken attack Bernie on MTP Daily. This is reminiscent of when Republicans first started coordinating their talking points and you would hear attacks coming from all sides. Smells like David Brock to me...See for instance:

BTW, Boxer, a person I like, has a family relationship with Clinton? There are so many conflicts of interest that go undisclosed with the Clinton's. It's like Chris Mathews wife getting fund raising support from Clinton for her Congressional race in MD. I've never heard Mathews disclose this before interviewing Clinton.

(45,319 posts)while CA as a whole is just 38.5%, Rancho Mirage has 1.5% African American population while CA has 6.5%, Barbara's chosen home town has 11.4% Latino population in California is like 38% or something.
It's crazy talk out of Barbara, who surrounds herself with the whitest possible slice of CA to claim she's used to seeing a diverse population of voters. Her home precinct is not at that diverse. She could live anywhere.
