2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIt's official, we can't depend on the independent voters.
This goddamn media is going to do everything they can to make Obama/Biden look bad. There is no way in Hell anyone can say Ryan won that debate, but to give him a 48%-44% edge is absolutely ludicrous. We're going to have to ensure that we get every Democrat fired up and ready to vote. We can't rely on the policies persuading the independents who they would benefit when the media won't even give a somewhat fair perspective. MSNBC is the best we've got and even they have some people who don't need to be there. The only way to battle this bullshit is to make sure every Democrat in the country understands the stakes in this election. We can't give in to this effort, we just can't.

(2,117 posts)That poll was, as the wingnuts would say, cooked. But also, Wolf Blitzer apparently declared it a tie. Look at the poll on their website, and you see Biden up by 30%. Sure it's online, but 30% is not coincidental. They crafted their poll to fit with their "tie" scenario. They've been misleading the public throughout this whole campaign and this is a severe misuse of the media's power to persuade, especially considering how CNN is generally seen as independent.

(827 posts)and I's include lots of tea partiers who no longer want to be associated with Republicans but will never vote for a Democrat..
Independent %'s are meaningless these days...

(2,117 posts)The ones who do not support the Democrats or the Republicans so much. When they turn on the TV and hear CNN telling them the debate was a tie or Ryan won, that's their takeaway. They may not have the time to watch the debate and realize Biden actually trounced him. Just look at the CNN online poll, that is a much more accurate representation of opinion on the debate. It may be online but 30% is 30%.

(36,120 posts)there really are no true independents. There are just stupid people too busy to pay attention to what secures or endangers their freedoms. IMO, "independent" these days is just code for the lazily uninformed or outright stupid. When a country's direction is changing, people MAKE time to engage. They may not be excused as "independent."

(1,134 posts)Did people really think he would have 'won'? Suckers. Biden wiped the floor w/ Ryan and so far it's a 'draw'. Even the CBS poll is not a resounding win. We got the debate we wanted and of course we're the only ones who are excited. Except the wingnuts are excited too. This is exactly what would have happened last week if the BASE DIDN'T FREAK OUT because of the pundits and help seal the narrative.

(19,458 posts)If you're talking about polls where they sample "independents" they are RARELY progressivs. They are republicans that found the GOP to be "too something" Or they are know it alls, that that are cynical about everything, and think they are too smart for either party (they are rarely that, usually they are people that are convinced that their ideas are right.. even in the fact of facts.)
So, if you see ANY poll that samples equal amounts of dem/repub/independent, they are actually sampling around 1/3 democrat 2/3 conservatives. Of course that is bullshit, because there are NOT 1/3 of the electorate registered as "independents."
So if you truly mean "independents" than you mean conservatives usually leaning toward libertarians.
Or did you mean undecideds?? Because people keep making that mistake every election thinking that they should sample 1/3 independent, as IF they are not conservatives. They are.

(2,117 posts)The media has the power to persuade these people and they sure aren't going to do anything to persuade them to vote Democrat.

(649 posts)If we really believe in the ideas of the democratic party, we aren't waiting for the media to do the job the people were meant to do.

(2,436 posts)Independents are usually the minority party in a state with an opposite majority party. So you get people who are dems in a repug state who for the sake of keeping the peace declare themselves independent... and repugs in dem states doing the same.
Undecideds are the uninformed, who will vote for whomever they think will be the winner.... that way they can say they voted for the winner. That is why momentum in the last four weeks is critically important, so that the small percentage of true idiots will vote for you.

(36,120 posts)Republicans, conservatives or libertarians. I consider almost all of them political slackers who cling to 'received' belief systems, or who harbor uninformed belief systems that they allow to persist in order to coexist with ignorant apolitical types that surround them.
