http://www.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeednews/south-carolina-democratic-primary-winner#.vyxm27bAkSanders spent the day on Saturday outside South Carolina, campaigning at huge rallies in Texas and Minnesota, Super Tuesday states the Sanders campaign hopes will give him a large number of delegates next week.
Theres no way we are going to lose Minnesota, Sanders said to the cheering crowd. I can see that. You are just too smart.

He does not use the word smart, he uses the word BRILLIANT in that exchange, and says there's no way they will lose. I suspect someone was relying on a printout of the closed captions when they crafted that story.
I do agree that the context is not as the article presented it. But I also think I shouldn't have had to badger you repeatedly to get the correct citation, and further, I didn't appreciate your "white" comment towards me upthread.

(24,411 posts)I heard Bernie's joke verbatim at a few of his Iowa rallies.
Just as you said. He talks about how Clinton's campaign is funded by a Super Pac and he talks about how he doesn't have a Super Pac. Then he brings up his average donation. He asks the audience if they know what the average donation is and everyone screams out, "$27!" (or in my case, in Iowa, it was $26). Then, he tells the audience how smart they are and that he will win there for sure--if there is a good turnout.
This is SOP I imagine, in nearly every speech he does.

(135,425 posts)The number is different in the cspan counter--but it ain't 1:06.
If anyone is to "blame" here, it's the person who wrote the article at Buzzfeed. That article is entirely ambiguous and leaves the statement (misquoted--he said brilliant, not smart) hanging out there without any context whatsoever.
I don't fault Kev, I fault Buzzfeed.
FangedNoumenom
(145 posts)That took an out of context quote and implied something ridiculous about it? Without investigating further first?
Geesh, the spin is ridiculous in Hillaryland. I don't know how you guys keep your feet on the ground.
MADem
(135,425 posts)The conclusion Kev drew was appropriate given the material. And the conclusion he drew was that it was "interesting."
Go on, give it a click. Read it without introducing your after-knowledge of the actual video into your thinking.
The one to "blame" is the Buzzfeed writer who took the comment out of context and did not even quote it accurately.
This isn't about "spin" unless you're talking about the fact that Buzzfeed didn't paint a full picture.
If you want to cast some of those aspersions, I suggest you start there because that's the source.
Using terms like "Hillaryland" makes you look like what you're looking like to me right now. You acquit yourself poorly when you take that tack.
FangedNoumenom
(145 posts)You're right, Buzzfeed didn't accurately report the entire quote. Media never does, and Kev should have known better than to take a small quote that was clearly out of context and insinuate nonsense with it. He IS to blame.
Again, I ask, what was "interesting" about Sanders' comment?
MADem
(135,425 posts)Buzzfeed and I will acknowledge that they didn't cover the remark accurately (it was BRILLIANT not SMART) nor was it in context at all.
So they were wrong. But given a lot of the dramatics that have come out of the campaign process of late, as analyzed and articulated by Charles Blow and others, his sensitivity is not misplaced. There's a lot of resentment bubbling up against black people for the crime of not feeling the Bern, and it's being expressed on the internet.
That kind of commentary does put one in a defensive position, understandably.
Read this, and maybe you will begin to take the point: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/11/opinion/campaign-stops/stop-bernie-splaining-to-black-voters.html
FangedNoumenom
(145 posts)would make racist comments following his defeat in SC is totally preposterous and driven by nothing but pure ideological fervor. And this assumption was made in the midst of a huge victory for your side to boot! Sore winners indeed. Even now, when confronted about the ugliness on your side, you choose to deflect and pivot to specious nonsense about "Berniesplaining." And then you wonder why so many of us are going to refuse to join your side if Bernie loses.
MADem
(135,425 posts)Thanks for proving the point with absolutely no effort on my part.
Tucked among all this Bernie-splaining by some supporters, it appears to me, is a not-so-subtle, not-so-innocuous savior syndrome and paternalistic patronage that I find so grossly offensive that it boggles the mind that such language should emanate from the mouths or keyboards of supposed progressives.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/11/opinion/campaign-stops/stop-bernie-splaining-to-black-voters.html
As someone who purports to admire James Baldwin, you might actually want to study the article as his words are used to express the author's thesis.
FangedNoumenom
(145 posts)What does that article, or "Berniesplaining" in general, have to do with the OP? And again, for the fourth or fifth time, what was "interesting" about Bernie's statement?
As an aside, those Baldwin excerpts in that article should be read by every Hillary supporter, particularly this one:
"'Our people' have functioned in this country for nearly a century as political weapons, the trump card up the enemies sleeve; anything promised Negroes at election time is also a threat leveled at the opposition; in the struggle for mastery the Negro is the pawn."
MADem
(135,425 posts)was a) brief and b) lacked context.
Given the way we are so often "Bernsplained" about how stupid we are to not vote for the Senator, it is an easy leap to assume the worst, which is what Kev did.
No one likes to be talked down to, told they are stupid, "low information," or regarded as "less than" for the choices they make.
Sanders is a fine man. Not all of his supporters live up to his ideals--and that is one point Charles Blow is making.
The fact that you couldn't take those simple points, despite having read the article I provided, is, dare I say, "interesting."
FangedNoumenom
(145 posts)Theres no way we are going to lose Minnesota, Sanders said to the cheering crowd. I can see that. You are just too smart.
So what was construed, if I'm understanding the "logic" at play here, was that Bernie himself was Berniesplaining by saying that the crowd was smart unlike those "stupid black people" in South Carolina that didn't vote for him, yes? What total nonsense. It'd be one thing to construe racism from that quote if it came from a Bernie supporter (because, yes, the Berniesplaining phenomenom IS real and IS pervasive - it's only specious within the context of your weak argument) - but from Bernie himself? Give me a damn break. It was construed as racism due to ideological fervor, egregious cynicism (the calling card of any Hillary supporter) and the desire to find that one "GOTCHA!" moment (a desire that is likely driven by the collective fear that your corrupt candidate will succumb to such a moment herself - and she probably will).
"Interesting" indeed. Good day.

Given some of the conversations that have happened on DU, I get it.
However, if you listen to the quote in context, he was immediately responding to how they correctly said that his average donation was "$27."
In fact, he said the same thing in Iowa, after we responded correctly to the same question. He said, "That's right!" and he told us that we were smart. Everyone laughed. Except, at that time his average donation was $26.
He wasn't implying anything about SC or the people in SC.

It's as tacky as Obama's comments in the fundraiser in SF (which were at least private)

(39,451 posts)many times how proud he is that he has had 4 million individual contributions to his campaign and the average donation to his campaign is $27.
So now when he goes into his spiel about how proud he is of his 4 million supporters he asks the audience "and do you know what the average donation is?" And they shout back "$27 dollars!" And he tells them they are so smart and everyone laughs.
That's all this is.
It had nothing to do with SC - nothing! If you ever watched one of his rallies you would know that this is just a light hearted moment in all his rallies. This happens at all of his rallies. A fun little back and forth, a little bit of self depreciating humor.

(27,275 posts)And some are still refusing to accept it. There is no point in being subtle about this anymore. The ones pushing this have a clear agenda, so instead or arguing with them or trying to reason with them: it is long past time to call out the agenda. I am sick of these stupid games.

37 DUers rec this also in agreement
Yet when this part of Sanders' usual stump speech is put in context no HRC supporter really cares. They've got another manufactured moment that "demonstrates" Sanders is a racist.
And this is another example for Sanders supporters demonstrating that HRC supporters are determined to lie about him on race issues.
Round and round we go. I will say I've lost any respect for the OP and everyone cheerleading this nonsense. This kind of stuff is driving Sanders supporters even farther away from ever supporting HRC

(8,352 posts)seriously at one point. But no more.
Whether you know it or not, you are now being used by the Clinton smear machine.
You have been given the answer to why he does this and has done this often. In context, it is a part of a dialog he has with his crowds during his stump speech. There is nothing 'interesting' about it. He is not 'tone deaf'. He is not 'racist'. He is not dog-whistling.
That you continue to ignore the facts, do not update or delete your OP, and instead push a very definite agenda, I will dismiss you summarily. Your posts obviously should not be taken seriously. You are simply here like others I won't mention to stir the pot.
What a fucking disappointment.

(2,340 posts)than to imply that there was a bit of racism in that. Nowhere did he say anything about SC. You are either naive by being led by Clinton's agents or you're not capable of critical thinking to begin with. I believe it's Hillary that resorts to dog whistle statements.

(27,275 posts)Do you even bother to read the many posts in this thread that explain that this is his standard stump speech? He gives it all the time...it's a part of a call and response he does with his audience. It was not a reference to SC or black voters. You have been played, once again, by people who keep trying to paint Sanders as a racist.

noiretextatique
(27,275 posts)That explain this is a part of his standard stump specch. The OP might not have known that initially, but he knows it now. The OP, and others, were claiming this was some dig at SC voters, specifically the black ones. Some are still claiming that, but I see the OP has left the building. Too late...the damage was done. The outrage squad showed up, and ran with it. This is an excellent example of how to manufacture a slander.
