2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumReally disappointed in news coverage this morning.
I spent some time flipping around to news shows this morning, watched some local news, and listened to NPR on the way to work. The universal narrative this morning goes something like, "Biden was trying to make up for Obama's lackluster performance last week and now let's listen to Ryan recite a Republican talking point." Liberal media, my ass.

(15,090 posts)Yes, I went there. Fox not only seemed to totally avoid saying anyone won, but repeatedly stated that VP debates don't matter. Kraut was on furiously spinning that line.

(14,195 posts)Don't worry about it. Plus the twitterverse has been rocking with pro-Joe sentiment! Obama's team even bought the #malarkey tag!

(53,410 posts)He was talking to us. Anyone who cares and is going to vote watched that debate. It doesn't matter what the media says. We saw him beat Ryan at every turn. There is nothing Biden missed. Ryan was barely able to keep his smirking poker face because he knew he was beaten. And the moderator, Martha Raddatz, was phenomenal! I think she went off script a few times herself.

(31,464 posts)On Morning Schmoe...they both do obviously love Romney and Ryan, it's ridiculous. They can't even pretend to be impartial.

(16,064 posts)Listening to NPR you would think that Biden wasn't even there. Again and again they let ryan spout his right wing tasking points without Joe's response or answer to the same question. It was disgusting. I support a NPR monthly and I am seriously thinking of dropping support over this kind of nonsense.
I might as well have been listening to fox news

(45,319 posts)Not contending the content you saw, just wanting the power of the actual information. I would offer that local news reports do vary and not 'every area around the country' has the same slant or content, because that which attracts viewers in Los Angeles would not attract viewers in a more conservative city. It stands to reason if you think it through. Examples can be found in coverage of minority news, for example. LGBT news coverage is simply not the same in every area around the country, just as our rights are not the same in every area.

(879 posts)Most people watched, saw Biden cleaned Ryan's clock, then went to bed. And probably won't think about this stuff again until Tuesday and the presidential debate.
We are obviously much more engaged so we sit here and closely follow everything. But normal people won't sit through a 90 minute debate then watch the news about it.
The media is trying to drive a "tied race" narrative, and they can't do that if they say Biden won. They needed a draw, so they claim a draw. It's obviously malarkey.

(4,551 posts)The media can have some effect in shaping the narrative, but the average guy out there isn't going to watch hours of analysis and listen to all the pundits rake it over for the next several days.
That's what we nutty political junkies worry about.
The fact that Biden won a number of viewer polls (eg. CBS) is a good sign.

(36,128 posts)you will always be really disappointed. For quite a while now, people have clung to the idea that journalism has a compelling mission to tell the fact-based truth, but most of us have to face that political constructs built to win profit and power at all costs tend to cherry pick at the fact buffet.
You'll get used to this. Just find your dependable, factual sources and don't watch so much TV. It does nothing for rational people's sanity.

(3,003 posts)Biden clearly bested Ryan last night and the media is trying to say that somehow Ryan looked better and Biden was somehow "rude" (???).
If the media is liberal, I'm the Queen of England.

(971 posts)You have people like Wolf Blitzer, David Gergan, CNN, and CNBC claiming either ties or an outright Ryan win. Disgusting!! Anyone with half a brain, who saw the debate last night clearly Biden wiped the floor with the kid!!

(823 posts)The media are in love with Romney-Ryan, and their biased review of last night's debate is just the latest evidence. THe media, including MSNBC, have decided to punish Obama for ostensibly not being prepared or energetic at the first debate, and are pissing on him by making the first debate the biggest story of the entire campaign, ignoring the good job numbers except for giving too much coverage to rightwing conspiracy theories about the numbers, feeding the narrative that Obama is in freefall, and by calling last night's VP debate a tie and criticizing Biden's laughter and demeanor as rude and disrespectful.
