Two Respected Liberal Journalists Issue An Important Warning To Democrats

Two Respected Liberal Journalists Issue An Important Warning To Democrats

By Rmuse on Sun, Feb 28th, 2016 at 7:40 pm

As no small number of pundits, reporters, and opinion columnists have noted for months, it is just downright dangerous to even remark about the Democratic race for the presidential nomination.

It is beginning to appear that regardless the warnings from respected liberal pundits and journalists alike, there is going to be no end to the rancor among Democrats that portend an electoral disaster in November. As no small number of pundits, reporters, and opinion columnists have noted for months, it is just downright dangerous to even remark about the Democratic race for the presidential nomination. It has gotten so bad that even uttering the once safe line that “both sides do it” is still dangerous and incites substantial rage among faithful supporters; even though both sides are not doing it.

Journalists, pundits, and opinion writers are used to criticism; one can never please everyone and they damn sure should never try to please anyone. However, it is worth spending a few hundred words to warn, once again, that the level of sheer animosity and hostility roiling among Democrats does not bode well for winning anything in November.

One Washington Post opinion columnist and journalist, Jonathan Capehart, who made the mistake of putting his opinion in print joined another once-respected journalist, Rachel Maddow, in issuing a “stark warning that should be heeded.” In Maddow’s case, the warning targets the Democratic Party for not moving to tamp down the bitterness between Clinton and Sanders’ supporters that threatens to exacerbate the already extremely poor voter turnout that will only get worse in November. Capehart issued a similar warning and did the really silly thing of enraging one candidate’s supporters by reporting, albeit mildly, on the level of nastiness he suffered for daring to express his opinion.

The point that both Capehart and Maddow are desperately trying to make is that Democrats are is serious electoral trouble in November. As this column noted to incredible criticism and hostility just last week, because Republican voters, with all their faults, will turn out in record numbers to vote for whichever candidate is the eventual nominee, Democrats had better unite, register voters, or weep when a Republican wins the White House.

So as not to incur the wrath of any candidate or their passionate acolytes, or give the appearance of having a wrong opinion, taking sides, leveling criticism, or being biased, most of this little screed is a simple report about what two once-respected liberal journalists recently said. They are “once-respected” now because they lost the support and respect of some Democrats for doing what they are paid to do; having and expressing the “wrong” opinion.

I've never thought of Capeheart as a liberal journalist, much less held respect for his writings. He's a status quo, careerist creature of Washington.

On the other hand, when I used to watch Rachel on MSNBC I did respect her opinions. I don't watch MSNBC any more so I really don't know what she's been up to lately.

Hillary shields that make no bones about it...are you kidding? Capehart is responsible for that horrible smash up regarding the photo of Bernie Sanders and Rachel Maddow for all she does to try to appear impartial, still comes across as favoring Clinton. They are journalist, their opinion is worth no more than the opinion of anyone else.

There is no mention of what Capehart did. Capehart, husband of a Hillary staffer, used his position at WaPo to issue false information about Bernie, and then he doubled down when called on it. He took the false information to MSNBC, as well. And he did not ever apologize or issue a true correction.

It is THAT act that has enraged liberals/progressives/independents.

As for respect for him? He lost it ALL in that incident, revealing himself to be a stooge.

That way, Capehart would not have been caught lying.

Heck, he wouldn't have to lie in this story claiming he was only posting an opinion. He claimed it was a fact that Sanders was not in that picture...but couldn't be bothered to do basic research like contact the photographer.

Jonathan Capehart.

That was a takedown!!!

I can't believe he referenced the incident again. Should have retracted the thing, knucklehead.

Capehart was caught in a lie, a lie with a clear agenda. Not a mistake, and one that he double and triple-downed on, even after being proven wrong.

He did his part, as he is paid to do. His husband is a Clinton staffer. Capehart deservs to be fired, but since he's doing the bidding of higher powers, he'll probably advance his career by making these lies.

It's all based on the circumstance that Bernie had high authenticity numbers compared to Hillary, and a series of actions were taken to try to change that, involving dishonest attacks on Bernie's integrity.

The attacks don't have to be true, the amplification power of the MSM put the lies out there over and over again on the airwaves. You'd have to have been watching very closely to have seen any correction of the lies, even after they were exposed. Mission accomplished.

The OP is a complete fail, misreads the situation entirely.

I just got a pm from a Capehart supporter. Evidently he/she did not take kindly to my comment about Capehart that I posted earlier in the thread. They also didn't like Bernie even though I didn't mention Bernie in my post. The funny thing is I don't see where that person posted a comment in this thread. I guess they would rather work behind the scenes so to speak. Does that kind of thing happen a lot around here? Do people get pm's from someone who hasn't posted in the thread?
