Question about the car accident story Ryan told last night-

I have to admit that I didn't watch it live. I was so nervous about the debate that I just followed the reactions on DU. (Mega thanks to all of you who kept that going!)

I just saw a comment on Twitter that said Ryan was rude to tell that car accident story in light of Biden's tragic loss of a wife and child in a car accident.

Anyone else have that thought? Did they show Joe's expression while Ryan was telling that story?

1. The first thing I thought was he was trying to un-nerve Joe.

It didn't work. Joe has lived his personal tragedy for far too long to be thrown off by that tactic.

It was so obvious what Ryan was doing --- clearly a planned tactic to 'upset' Biden.

Didn't work because it was clumsy and, well, crass.

And Ryan ought to be shamed for it. If nothing else, the "liberal" media should shame him. You know if the situation's were reversed and a Dem did something like this, the R spin machine would be BLASTING their disgust all over the airwaves.

It was disgusting and craven and obviously Ryan did it on purpose. These are the guys we want running our country? They may be the meanest ticket in my political lifetime.

I can't believe Ryan went there. When he started telling that story I thought he was crazy. I loved the fact that Biden was very modest in bringing up his own tragedy.

5. I thought it inappropriate and stupid. They were talking about bailing out the American auto

industry, and suddenly ryan comes up with this story as some sort of proof that romney is a good person, and really didn't want the auto industry to go under

It was stupid and ridiculous and ryan should be slammed for it

absolutely below the belt. When in reality those same children are probably on Medicaid. Because most families can not afford those Medical Cost without some Government Assistance. The very program Ryan wants to Gut. Vice President Biden lost his wife and child in a car accident. It was shameful and cruel.Ryan gets no Brownie points for his comments on how good of a man Romney was. It wasn't a smart example.

10. Yes, and I even read it in an article posted somewhere here on DU that it was deliberate

Joe winced, and shared his story....and demonstrated true empathy with his response that (paraphrasing) sometimes all you can do is show that if you made it through (such a loss), they will too.

And then Joe undermined Ryan's outward attempt to portray Romney as being empathetic by stating, "We all know that Gov. Romney is personally very generous." Emphasis on the word "personally" and he repeated that statement and word. Because we all know that Romney has been generous with people from his church and within his own small circle.

I didn't catch Ryan's expression, but somebody else thought he looked as though he realized immediately that he'd gone way too far and stepped in it.

is a kind, caring man. A way to say he is compassionate. And I am sure he has done some "good things" in his life but does it balance out the cruel and draconian things Romney has done in his life? I don't think so. He is someone who can have feelings for an individual he meets but with the stroke of a pen can wipe out jobs and a stable future for hundreds, possibly thousands of employees that work at companies he has deemed not worthy of saving. He is VERY cold and calculated when it comes to making money.

So to balance that fact, they are attempting to trot out stories that are designed to tug at our heart strings. I thought that for Ryan to pull this story out of his rehearsed bag of tricks at this point in the debate was silly and didn't relate to the topic of the Auto Industry Bailout in the least. He heard automobile and instantly jumped to a story about some family in an automobile accident. That was the only connection to the topic.....automobiles. He wanted to deflect from the fact that Romney opposed the Bail Out and was in favor of letting Detroit go bankrupt.

I thought it was also insensitive to use that as an example when he was sitting at the table with a man who knows personally the pain of losing a wife and daughter in an automobile accident. Maybe he was thinking that it would throw Joe off his game, but it really was a low blow and shows the desperation of the Romney team to use it as way to derail Joe. Thank goodness it did NOT. Just shows they will do or say ANYTHING to try to win.

A man who hides his money in the cayman islands, who closed down businesses and stole workers pension funds for himself and who would go to the hospital to tell a woman not related to him, that she should not have an abortion even when her doctor says the pregnancy is life threatening, is NOT a compassionate man.
