2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHave we heard from the "car crash" family yet?
I'm referring to the family Paul Ryan so shamelessly brought up in the debate. Supposedly Romney offered to pay for the college for the injured boys. I have not seen anything more on this, other than commentary on how reprehensible it was to bring up a fatal car crash when debating Joe Biden, and how Biden didn't rise to the bait and basically bitch-slapped Ryan into shameful silence.
So, a few questions present themselves:
1. Has the family come forward to confirm this?
2. How long ago did this happen?
3. Did the boys ever get to college, and did Romney make good on his pledge? I mean, I can go up to any poor family at random and say, "I'm gonna pay for your college," but what happens when the rubber meets the road and I actually have to pony up?
4. Why didn't Romney offer to pay for any huge medical bills, which certainly would have been of a more pressing concern?
Anybody know?

(2,381 posts)From what Mr. Nixon (the boys' father) says, Romney gave financial support over the years, and also took a personal involvement in the boys' lives. I have to give Romney credit where credit is due on this. But it doesn't change any of my opinions regarding his policies or suitability for holding office.

(24,411 posts)I noticed that about the car-crash comment.
How could Paul Ryan bring up a fatal car crash, knowing that Biden's wife had been killed in a car crash?
It was deliberate and evil, no doubt.
I also thought Paul Ryan's remark when Biden mentioned the 47 percent was also a double-edged sword--making fun of Biden for being a stutterer when he was younger. Biden overcame his stuttering problem. Ryan knew full well, that Biden would bring up the 47 percent and they crafted a barb that worked on so many levels didn't they? Look how carefully worded that phrase is...and how it could easily be used to bully someone about a speech or stuttering problem
I think the vice president very well knows, that sometimes the words dont come out of your mouth the right way,
These Republicans are sociopaths. They are very sick.

fits that I think

(24,411 posts)And if you read Ryan's comment--it's sick and evil because it was worded in such a way that clearly could cause Biden to harken back to his days when he stuttered. Biden was teased about it relentlessly and I am sure bears many emotional scars, as the bullying and teasing surrounding his stutter happened when he was growing up.
So yeah, Ryan didn't come out and make fun of Joe's stuttering. He was making a comment about Joe's gaffes. But Ryan's comments also could have reminded Joe of his younger speech challenges and the people who were so mean about it. Again, see the careful wording:
I think the vice president very well knows, that sometimes the words dont come out of your mouth the right way,
Here is some info (link at end of pg) from an article on Biden's stuttering and how he overcame it:
"WHEN Joe Biden was a youngster he had a stutter, cruelly earning him the name Bi-Bi-Biden. He conquered that affliction to become one of the Senate's great talkers and Barack Obama's pick as his vice-presidential running mate.
As a child, Biden stuttered and was teased by his classmates. He practiced reading aloud in front of a mirror and worked hard to overcome it. During law school he befriended a stutterer and worked with him regularly on his speech. Now Biden is known as a loquacious orator.
In the Biden family, children were taught to respect Catholicsm, but not necessarily the person in it. As a boy, Biden took endless ribbing from classmates for a stutter he later overcame. Much of the time, the nuns tried to help. But when a seventh-grade teacher mimicked Bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-Biden's stutter in front of the class, his mother, Jean, demanded a meeting with the principal and the offending nun. "If you ever speak to my son like that again, I'll come back and rip that bonnet off your head," she said. Later, when then-Senator Biden told her he was going to visit the pope, she said: "Don't you kiss his ring.""
