have not been handling this situation well at all. Benghazi is not where the US embassy is located, it's Tripoli as the OP said. Benghazi is a consulate where Ambassador Stevens visited periodically. This needs to be clarified. Consulates are known to have less security than embassies.
Also, the protest at the embassy in Cairo seems to have been conflated with the problems in Benghazi. There were protests over the movie in Cairo earlier in the day leading to the note from the Embassy there that's been criticized. It seems as though the CIA grouped the protests in Cairo with the problem in Benghazi to explain why they thought the consulate in Benghazi was attacked. Of course, the CIA might have just lied about it.
Another overlooked point is that the attack in Benghazi was retribution for us using a drone to take out the most recent Al Qaeda number two. We took him out on the 10th which led to the plot among the attackers that they could get payback for his death with the added bonus of doing it on 9-11.
We need a Dem to step up and spell this out.
