BOSTON Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are battling it out in Massachusetts ahead of the March 1 primary here and the states most important endorsement, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, is still sitting on the sidelines of the debate, watching and waiting for her moment of maximum leverage.
Even as Clinton turns Massachusetts a predominantly white, progressive New England state that should be tailor-made for Sanders into a battleground Super Tuesday state, the campaign has been quietly respectful of Warrens desire to remain neutral.
In part, thats because the progressive standard-bearer and the only member of the states congressional delegation who has not endorsed Clinton is expected to play the role of peacemaker in the Democratic Party at some point in the months leading up to the convention, sources familiar with Warrens thinking said.
If Clinton wins enough delegates by the end of March to become the presumptive Democratic nominee, Warren is expected to negotiate hard before giving her support to Clinton. In doing so, she could play a critical role helping to bring young, enthusiastic Sanders supporters into her fold.

No big surprise there. Disappointing for both campaigns and their supporters, but a very practical and pragmatic approach to maximizing influence within the party.

(3,660 posts)and this story is accurate (which I don't doubt it). My thoughts are that there is a significant area of conflict between the most dearly held positions of Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton due Clinton's chumminess with Wall St.

(6,551 posts)Warren gets concessions for herself and plays a critical role in uniting the Hillary and Bernie groups. If successful, her role boosts her power in the party which also promotes her own agenda.

(135,425 posts)Sometimes, the Kingmaker (or Queenmaker) role is much more powerful AND much more flexible. It's sometimes more satisfying to pull the strings behind the scenes. Everyone who matters in day to day life knows who the power behind the throne is, even if average people don't.

There is no way that Warren or even Sanders himself is going to sell Clinton to young voters or to most Sanders supporters.
The Democratic Party nominating Hillary Clinton will be it's undoing.
For many at this point, just saying "I'm a Democrat" and expecting that person's vote is no longer good enough.

(10,786 posts)Now she needs to keep her powder dry because if Clinton wins the nomination (likely) and then blows the general election (inevitably), Warren might be the only one with the ability to pick up the pieces of the crippled Democratic party.
If I were Warren, I would be working hardest on building bridges with the few still functioning local machine political systems of the Democratic party.
