2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI've yet to ever meet a republican that said they would vote for Hillary.
In fact, just the opposite. I constantly hear republicans say they could never in a million years and being held at gun point, cast their vote for Hillary. Tough to win a GE without some coming over...save you pull an Obama and gtvo on demographs that normally don't vote.
Now in the past month I've heard no less than a dozen conservatives tell me they would vote for Sanders over Trump...a revelation that I harken back to Reagan Democrats...and coined Sanders Republicans. Every time I hear a conservative say they'd vote for Sanders over Trump it blows my mind. When was the last time you ever heard of a republican crossing over to vote for a democrat?particularly in a GE?
But I have never heard a republican say they could vote for Hillary under any circumstances. They hate her and have for two decades. That hate is engrained. It's not likely going to change.

(3,014 posts)she would probably vote for her but admits she "doesn't want to."
Well...I don't know if I'd hold that up as an example. The only way a republican votes for Hillary is if she has to. Lol
Agschmid
(28,749 posts)She'd much rather vote for a moderate Republican... Because she is one.
Hillary isn't. That's kind of the point here.

(3,014 posts)"It's a given that some Republicans would flee Donald and reluctantly back Hillary in a general election matchup. "
Where in any of these articles does it say that these republicans want to vote for Hillary? They just keep admitting that they'll be forced to and that they don't want to.
Very different from Sanders Republicans. These are conservatives that WANT to vote for Bernie. Not because they have a gun held to their heads.

(1,021 posts)it's based on their perception of Bernie's integrity and honesty. And hey, those are good reasons to vote for someone, especially since very few people qualify for those titles.
Incidentally, there is a whole Republicans for Sanders subreddit and Twitter account.

(8,168 posts)I wouldn't dismiss her potential influence on other moderate Republicans. Not that I even give much of a crap about Republicans supporting our candidate, but I wouldn't dismiss her perspective out of hand, the interview she gave last night was 'real'.
Chris Hayes talks to the former Governor of New Jersey, Republican Christine Todd Whitman about what a Trump candidacy would do to the Republican party.

I doubt she will have much influence. Party members like victories and are not principled. Well at least that's what I am told here when I am called a traitor and worse for voting on principle for someone other than Clinton.

(58,785 posts)relations emphasize that. Here in the South I suspect a few people I'm acquainted with are actually closet liberals (not just conservatives who might vote Hillary), but I don't expect them to ever announce it in public. That would be rudely disturbing to the group and also invite trouble. Those people who speak up tend to get heated and aggressive fast when they spot an opponent, kind of like some ardent ones here. Instead, the way the ones I'm thinking off handle it is to insert some little point gently into a conversation headed off the cliff and, if the crowd leaps over anyway, to just continue sipping their drinks and smiling pleasantly.

(4,960 posts)Republicans who are more moderate and hate what the Republican party has become - but they dislike Hillary so they prefer Sanders. I had at least 3 Republican friends who voted for Obama because in the first election they were scared of McCain and Palin and in the second because they hated the idea of Mitt Romney and what they saw as the disintegration of the middle class. One of my Republican friends hates the idea of how money is influencing elections. We disagree on some issues (she works for a nuclear energy company) but she believes politicians are corrupt and would never vote for Clinton. She is toying with Sanders but will probably sit out the primary. In a general if it were Trump vs Sanders - she would vote Sanders. Trump vs Clinton - she will sit it out.

(27,814 posts)I'm asking DU. If HRC is "a Republican" whose policies align with the GOP's - as is claimed here on a regular basis - then why is it that the Republicans "hate her with a passion", as it also claimed here on a regular basis?
If Republican voters are willing to cross party lines to vote (D) rather than vote for Trump, why would they vote for the "socialist" - whose potential presidency, it is also claimed here, the GOP is "terrified" of - instead of the (D) who is allegedly for all of the things Republicans are for?

(42,703 posts)Working in DC on policy matters, I know a lot of republicans. They are disgusted and freaked about Trump. One person, who worked for a republican senator back in the 1990s, and is as reliably republican as the come, recently sent a Unitarian (and very liberal) mutual friend the following message: "my party this election seems determined to drive us closer together than we could have imagined. Should it nominate Trump, you may find me in your church in more senses than one.
