Related: About this forumBill Clinton did not break the law
http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/01/politics/bill-clinton-campaigning-polling-place-super-tuesday/index.html"Brian McNiff, spokesman for the secretary of the commonwealth of Massachusetts, says shaking hands alone isn't prohibited. Explicit campaigning is what's banned within 150 feet of a polling places.
"Just meeting people doesn't constitute campaigning," McNiff told CNN. "We received no information that anything like that happened."
I don't think he should have done this, but he broke no laws, and does anyone really think that his showing up actually got people to change their vote?

(11,495 posts)I saw a video of Bill Clinton talking, and some arrows pointing one way saying it was the polling place, and another arrow pointing the other way saying Bernie supporters with signs. Not one time did the person taking the video pan over to the entrance of the polling place to who how far away it was, nor did it pan over to the Bernie supporters with signs. Am I supposed to take the word of whoever posted the video, and explanation, simple because they said it was less that 150 feet? If I had taken the video I would have shown the entrance and the Bernie supports from the same position I was filming Clinton.
Sorry, but that video proved nothing about the distance or the other complaints about the Bernie supporters with signs. Also the link I provided said nobody had complained. Why didn't the person with the video complain and show the video to someone who could investigate it and check the actual distance from Clinton to the polling place?
Again, according the the link I provided he did not break any laws.

(5,170 posts)"actually [cause] people to change their vote"? I don't think so. What sane person votes because of a t-shirt?
But hey, if my sign or t-shirt isn't allowed in a polling place because of the appearance of impropriety, isn't it the same thing?

(8,733 posts)Are you kidding!?! The former POTUS and husband to one of the candidates, shows up at a polling station, GOES INSIDE, shaking hands and taking pictures and that is not campaigning???
If that isn't campaigning than I don't know what is

I bet hell would have been raised if it was Jane Sanders though.
angrychair
(8,733 posts)Even more so though, he is a former POTUS, everything he does is political. Especially when his wife is on the ballot during a primary election going on IN THAT POLLING PLACE. To say it is not campaigning is bullshit.

(19,841 posts)I actually think this could backfire. He comes off like a crazy snake oil salesman. Is this his idea of a good photo op?
Has he lost his mind?
I like that big "BANKERS FOR HILLARY" sign behind him...
Some guy yells "this is our polling place too!!"
"Feel the Bern, Slick Willy!" gets a big applause at the end.

(22,163 posts)Congressman who was up for re-election came into our polling place to say hello. He shook hands with all of us and those waiting to vote. He did not pass any campaign literature or ask for anyone's vote. It is not illegal to say hello and shake hands. Had he passed campaign literature or buttons, we would have asked him to leave and be sure he was the appropriate distance away from the door.

(45,319 posts)hypocritical road show. It looks bad. Splitting hairs about Bill's legality. Again. He should know better. Your manufactured bullshit firewall crap was long, long settled. This is an ex President intentionally pushing the envelope on election rules, that sucks. It's cheating. That's the intention. To be a living loophole to the law.
It's privilege on full display.

It is shitty optics.
And they love to exploit every single loop hole and gray area.
Like I said earlier, they had better be this nasty in the general AND with the Republican congress when trying to get 99%-friendly legislation passed.
If not, well, I will see you in 2020!!

(22,336 posts)But he should have stayed 150 feet away. Not that big of a deal. It isn't illegal to exist within 150 feet of a polling station, even if your wife is running for president, even if you used to be president, and even if you're holding or speaking through a megaphone - unless you're telling people whom to vote for with it. But he knows why he was there. He was obviously trying to get votes.
They play the game to win, and part of playing the game is stepping right up to the line without going over it. The issue is that Bernie supporters don't want someone who plays the same games that politicians have always played. We want something different.
