Hillary kicking it with black folks again.
Hillary Clinton has a particular ease of manner in Black Spaces. She is the type of person one might find at a Black church, school, function, rally, a prayer circle, or comforting black mothers of sons and daughters lost through gun violence. The grieving mothers of several of our nation's lost black children found a bit of comfort in the company of the former First Lady and Secretary of State.
Why am I saying this?
Well, I am a bit surprised at all of the surprise over Hillary's big win with black voters this Super Tuesday. I suppose I should have expected it, but still, why would anyone have thought his numbers would improve with us very much after such a resounding defeat in S.C.?
So, before we dissolve into a mess of slurs and slanderous statements about how mean and horrible us black people are, or start talking Stockholm Syndrome talk and all that jazz, let us notice one thing that might help us understand why Black people are comfortable voting for Hillary. Hillary Clinton is comfortable in black spaces. She is comfortable in minority spaces, period. She is always around.
Her ability to show that she is perfectly fine in a room filled with people of color, in a black church, is one good indication of why we are comfortable back. Most politicians have trouble in dealing with us directly, they find it difficult to not come off patronizing, to come into our spaces and have a meal and a chat. Hillary will come to us, come to church, to funerals, hug our kids and kiss our babies.
In contrast, when Bernie showed up at church with Ben Jealous, I felt uncomfortable watching him look so uncomfortable and out of place. He did not even eat a bite. That was telling to many of us. Not a bite passed his lips! I felt a bit offended and I ain't even cook it. (I am an atheist but even I know you have to eat and compliment the cook for goodness sakes!) It was a test and he failed.
I say this not as a person who is in love with Hillary, or as a person who wants to pressure anyone else to vote my way. Or even as a person who is opposed to Bernie; I'd vote for him if he won the primaries.
But the next time you find yourself wondering, "Why are blacks voting HILLARY?", remember how comfortable she is in OUR spaces. I mean, we CAN tell, ya know?

(4,311 posts)I will say that one of the reasons I really like Hillary is that I find her very authentic. When she's mad, she looks mad. When she's happy, it's obvious. When she's tired or sad, she puts on a strong face but you can still see the human being behind it. I trust her.

(9,823 posts)"Authentic" is probably the last word l would use to describe Hillary Clinton.

(8,541 posts)That said. I don't think she's anti black as other Bernie supporter's. Maybe that's because I am black.

(5,420 posts)Compare candidate to candidate if you need to compare. Her policies are not pro black. She uses them for elections. She's a player.

(8,541 posts)But if a black one does it's crickets.

(8,541 posts)And I'm not saying that they don't have a right to express their opinion. I just notice a lot of crickets when a fellow black Bernie supporter tries to engage and I don't mean this forum exclusively.

(37,428 posts)Or uncomfortable.
I won't completely dismiss the OP, because perceptions are, after all, a big part of why we vote for particular candidates.

(9,086 posts)Putting a black power fist in a Hillary Clinton logo is some of the funniest shit I've ever seen.
If you really do feel like those things go together, hey I respect your ideas, but to me it's super funny. Sorry.
MrWendel
(1,881 posts)your base is only White men, you have allot more to worry about then that logo. But hey, whatever helps you cry to sleep at night.

And remember, no whining about it- cause black people don't whine, they act.

(8,541 posts)And some call Bernie tone deaf.
MrWendel
(1,881 posts)voted yesterday? Those people?
NWCorona
(8,541 posts)I see that you didn't address my point.
That said I do appreciate the response.
MrWendel
(1,881 posts)was about Bernies' Tone Deafness. I see you share that with him. She was tone deaf enough to dominate the "Minority" vote.
NWCorona
(8,541 posts)I didn't say that you said his supporter's.
So how am I tone deaf?
How can Hillary be comfortable in black spaces when she has yet to attend an "open" Black forum to take questions from the crowd?

I'm not above saying I'm wrong on this point if so.

(8,541 posts)And all of the press on that event talks about Hillary giving a speech with no mention of taking questions.

NWCorona
(8,541 posts)It took 80+ days to take a question from her own press core and only because she was getting push back.
oasis
(49,408 posts)I've seen her out and about on her "listening tour" in small shops and cafes across the country. She engages many average everyday citizens and takes note of their concerns.

(20,234 posts)Former quotes from the author about hillary:
"her pandering is obvious"
"After welfare reform my mom told me Bill was a shit and Hillary was worse. She's so bad at hiding it; I have no idea why she's thinks it's not noticed."
----------
It's hard to take someone seriously when they spend a year or two telling everyone how Hillary is alternately pandering for votes and writing off the AA vote - and then they come back to say the exact opposite.
The problem with supporters like this is that they reinforce the common belief that Hillary and the campaign and her supporters will say anything, whether true or not, to get her elected. It's exactly why there is mocking about "Camp Weathervane."

(6,409 posts)I'll tell you right up front, I'm a Sanders supporter. But I notice Clinton is very, very comfortable in a church full of black people who appear to be middle age and older. We see photos and videos of her in such crowds, and they love her, and she loves them, and it's all very warm and cozy. Outside the south, outside the church, outside the age group, it's not the same thing. Black support is not so nearly unanimous. She controls events to avoid confrontations with young black activists. It's a smaller version of the old "generation gap" we heard about in the 1960s, and it's not a big thing, and it's not going to help Sanders or hurt Clinton very much, but there is something going on there.
