2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumGeorge Clooney: I Support Hillary, And Donald Trump Is A Fascist
Movie star George Clooney professed his support of the former Secretary of State during an exclusive interview with the Guardian.
I am a Hillary supporter, he declared. I am doing a fundraiser for her. And thats a big deal considering the shindig he threw in support of President Obama in 2012 netted $12 million in one night.
But Clooney also showed love for Clintons Democratic rival Bernie Sanders.
I really love Bernie Sanders, and am really glad he is in the debate. He is forcing the conversation to things that never get talked about in US politics: disparity between the rich and the poor, which is getting worse and worse every day.
However, Clooney went on to say that Sanders focus on that one issue is hurting him in the polls.

(17,320 posts)he would have noticed that Bernie is definitely NOT a one issue candidate. Just because he identifies the financial inequity, doesn't mean he isn't also interested in education, civil rights, the environment and a number of other important issues. The "one issue candidate" is a tag that the Clinton campaign hung on him.
If Clooney had listened to an entire speech by Clinton, he might have asked himself was she a good enough speaker to command hundreds of thousands of dollars from big banks on Wall Street.
Clooney is a smart guy, no doubt. His glib dismissal of Bernie and his ardent support of Clinton suggest to me that he hasn't given politics a lot of thought. He has his millions. He is a made man. (And a talented one as well). The rest of us are worried sick about the dysfunction of our Government as it relates to elections, governing and the unfair flow of money to the uber rich.

(10,345 posts)It's just that all the problems are intrinsically connected. There are many different things that are needed in order to solve them. And he never says that reigning in Wall St is the only way.
But, hey, you hear what you wanna hear am i right?

(1,377 posts)he was supporting Hillary from start and is spouting her talking points that is not true. Anyone who spouts a candidates lame talking points as they endorse that candidate obviously did not even try to find out the truth.

(86,005 posts)...I'm working-class 99%.
You sell the man to me like he's grassroots, but he's as elite as the rest of the social and political class he hangs with.

(1,835 posts)Are you reading Dan Gross in Fortune Mag? He makes that argument too. Gross lives in one of the tonier towns in Connecticut.
There is a huge difference between having $562,000 in net assets and $30 million in net assets. One means you have a nice house and the other means neither you nor your children will ever want or need. One was achieved through a government salary and the other was mostly from speeches to Wall Street and other wealthy organizations. If you don't see a difference, I don't know what to tell you.
And Gross and you just proved Bernie's in the 99% - just closer to the top of it.

(86,005 posts)...to me.
I'm 55 now and have been paycheck to paycheck all my adult life, likely always will be. Bernie Sanders is NOT in the same economic class as my family. You can spin it anyway you want. He's well-off, living off the public dole. His ultra-rich supporters might buy that 99% lie, but it's an insult to me.
Depaysement
(1,835 posts)And you are probably better off than the guy working at Walmart for the minimum wage.
That's not the point about the 99%. I'm not really sure why that insults you. Would you rather it be 95 or 62 or 87? The point is that the people have no power anymore. The power is with the billionaires and their friends and allies. That's one reason working people live paycheck to paycheck. They aren't paid enough and people at the top make way too much. That's why he supports the Fight for 15, unlike Hillary's Teetering for 12.
If you think Sanders is living off the public dole, you must think that of all politicians who aren't super-wealthy. Sanders, like Wellstone and Sarbanes, didn't exactly go into politics for the money. And like those guys he's worked pretty hard to help his constituents and bring under appreciated issues to light.
