Not that she wouldn't have been successful on her own, but in that case she wouldn't have been able to carpetbag into the Senate and into her own presidential campaign.
I give her credit for making things happen in about the only way open to a woman of her era. Becoming the Democratic nominee would be a historic first that would pave the way for women to succeed her into the White House by conventional means.
