Bernie as Hillary's VP? Very interesting interview with Tad Devine.

Tad Devine had a long conversation with Glenn Thrush of Politico. In the interview, Devine did not reject the idea of a Hillary/Bernie ticket. The full transcript is at the link. Here is an excerpt of the story:

“Maybe they’re going to put him on the ticket then,” Devine told me during a wide-ranging 45-minute interview for POLITICO’s “Off Message” podcast. He wasn’t joking, as far as I could tell.

This was a few hours before Devine headed off to Michigan to help his boss prepare for the debate — and he expressed hope that his untamable candidate would keep whacking her on all those paid Goldman Sachs speeches (Bernie obliged). But the veep idea clearly tickled the 60-year-old D.C.-based consultant, a former strategist to the Carter, Mondale, Gore and Kerry campaigns whom Sanders views as his bridge to a party establishment he detests (in a genial, nothing-personal way).

“I’m sure, of course, anyone would,” Devine says when I ask if he could see a scenario where Sanders would actually say yes. They haven’t talked about the possibility, Devine adds, and says Sanders would never, ever consider it “unless you know, it was done in the right and proper way.” That’s a far cry from last year, when Sanders and Co. rebuffed the second-banana suggestion by countering with an offer to give Clinton the vice presidential slot on his ticket.

And Hillary is heavily favored in the next 7 contests which include a number of delegate-rich states like Michigan, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois and Ohio.

Hillary will likely expand her popular vote lead.

Suggesting Hillary should be Bernie's VP doesn't make as much sense as saying Bernie should be Hillary's VP.

At least when you go by the numbers.

You think the Blankfeins of the world will allow that to happen? Hillary will have a running mate who is comfortable with the status quo, likely someone much younger and possibly someone from a battleground state.

“They don’t own the American flag, OK, these guys?” Devine says of Republicans. “They can put it on their label and they could do what they want on it. This is our country, OK? … We’re not giving America to the Republicans.”

Love it: We’re not giving America to the Republicans.

There is no way Sen. Sanders would agree to this preposterous idea.

It's as plausible an idea as Obama changing the constitution to get a third term and putting Sanders on the ticket with him.

In other words - it's not going to happen.

Sanders will be at the top of the ticket any how.

I'm sure this was just spun by the reporter in one way or another.

would have said something by now if the quotes were manufactured? Devine has a long history of working on campaigns and is considered an expert on the path to political nominations,my guess is that he's seen the writing on the wall.

Everything you don't like isn't necessarily a conspiracy or media bias.

The news here is that it Devine's comments reflect his belief that Bernie will not win the nomination. When your campaign managers is thinking that, it's news.

The Democrats have New England sewn up with the possible exception of New Hampshire.

If she is going for a liberal on financial policies then Sherrod Brown from Ohio or Klobuchar from Minnesota would be better choices and would most likely secure an Electoral College victory in those states.

If she is more concerned about the Latino vote then Julian Castro would be a strong selection and bring in several states such as California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and even possibly Texas depending what happens in the GOP.

I also doubt that the mutual animosity over the primaries can be overlooked in such a short period of time.

He's pretty rock solid in his principles. Hillary isn't.

Hillary represents something Bernie is trying to get out of our politics. He will not be her VP nor in her cabinet.

She'll ask for whoever her team analyzes will help get her the most electoral votes - probably a popular one from a large battleground state.

She'll ask for Bernie's help to bring his supporters into her camp. In exchange, she'll probably offer a speaking slot at the convention but in a time slot less than the norm for someone in his position. I don't know if he'll accept because the DNC has made it pretty clear that he is not welcome in the Democratic Party.
