2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAnyone who likes and respect President Obama, believes he's done a good job with the economy,
agrees with the vast majority of his policies and basically wants someone who is going to more or less continue them, should be supporting Hillary in the primaries. Agree?

Continue his policies is something different.

(25,699 posts)Me, I think that Obama's achievements can be built on, improved, expanded. That's how progress works, last I heard. That's one reason I support Sanders - he's a better option for getting progress on top of what's already built.

(1,890 posts)Another one of those threads where if you disagree in any way they accuse you of being anti-Obama or even worse racist. Are some of the Clinton supporters so desperate to win that they have to post threads every day to try to divide people? I feel so sorry for them that they have such little faith in their candidate that they feel the need to do this over and over and over.

(25,406 posts)I personally oppose his support of the death penalty, so in that respect I am proudly "anti-Obama". And I know that many DUers (not me) dislike the fact that he has signed several free trade agreements during his presidency. And I find it a little confusing that you are injecting the word "racist" into this; does opposing Obama's policy on the death penalty make me a racist?

(1,890 posts)It only seems to apply to Sanders supporters. By the way nice touch trying to turn it around on me but it's par for the course on these type of threads. I've seen it done so many times already which is why I posted what I did. You have a nice night.

(4,667 posts)any other policy I've ever seen. They attempt to gut democracy and make it into a shell that has no real power to change important things like health care, banking, education and services, by attempting to give corporations from around the world a level playing field to globally pillage the country. Vote for HRC if you dont want an more new Deals, want to pay top dollar for drugs, want to stop single payer health care by lying about it, and want privatization of public education, not just here, but in lots of other countries, like India. (the most recent casualty of 'progressive liberalisation') Vote for HRC if you want to see US jobs bid out to the lowest qualified bidding corporation from anywhere in the WTO or RGFS, who will get to pay their highly skilled workers minimum wage.

Former President Bill Clinton rapped President Obama's "pretty picture" of economic recovery, claiming in a campaign stop for his wife Monday that millions of Americans have been left behind.
He referred to Obama's State of the Union address and his claims of economic prosperity as a "pretty picture" most haven't experienced.
"Millions and millions and millions and millions of people look at that pretty picture of America he painted and they cannot find themselves in it to save their lives," he said in Raleigh, N.C.
"Hillary is running for president to put every single American in the picture President Obama painted," he added.

(13,390 posts)Here, we have 3% unemployment. Sounds good until you hear that we also have a 20% poverty level. People who are living the nightmare of working more than one job and still unable to afford the heallth insurance they are required to buy do not see the kind of economic improvement or the benefits of the ACA in their daily life. Worse, they have no hope that things will be better for their kids.
There is more progress to be made and for the sake of the people who have not benefitted but keep hearing how great things are, I think we need someone who is willing to be bold and say that there is a better, more inclusive way to do things.

This problem with your thinking is very much highlighted by the fact that on DU most of Hillary's current supporters were invective spitting Hillary opponents in 08, they saw no good in her and had no problem saying so in very strong and fully certain terms.

(11,607 posts)I think Obama has done a great job as president but I don't think Hillary is as progressive as he is on some issues, and I would prefer someone who is even a little bit more progressive than President Obama. I also prefer Sanders because I find him more trustworthy than Hillary, and this was one of the factors that led me to support Obama over Hillary in 2008. I think Obama has made some significant progressive accomplishments as president, but I would like the next president to be someone who seeks to expand on the progress he has made rather than simply continuing his policies.
I think it is fair to say that anyone who wants to continue President Obama's policies should be committed to supporting whichever of our two candidates becomes the nominee. I think we can all agree that a President Trump or President Cruz would not do a good job of continuing the vast majority of President Obama's policies.
