Disturbing lawn signs seen on vacation in North Carolina

I was in NC last week staying at my daughter's home in Goldsboro and also went to the Outer Banks for a few days. There were lawn signs everywhere along the way for both sides, particularly in the Outer Banks area, so much so that I'd say the public highways looked pretty dreadful littered with signs.

I don't pay particular attention to who has the most signs but I often pay attention to what is on signs, particularly if they look home made. In Cape Hatteras I saw maybe 4 very large hand made Romney signs on people's lawns with the following logos:

"Mitt Romney
Born in America"

and

"Mitt Romney
Take Back America"

My 6 year old granddaughter, looking at the latter sign, asked, "Take back America from who, Popop"? Frankly I didn't know what to say to her. How do you introduce the subject of racism to a child who hasn't the slightest idea why anyone would be biased based on skin color?

Sometimes people just disgust me.
