Does anybody expect a repeat of the 1980 or 1984 presidential election, but with the Democrats winning this time?

(9,314 posts)We already have some hostages being held. Gas prices are rising outrageously. Pretty soon interest rates will go up (although I don't think to 16 percent) and unemployment will remain high (due to Republican obstructionism).
They will use the 2000 election model to offset votes they don't want counted (already in progress; additional increments to follow).

Given an even playing field, we'd carry every state except maybe Idaho, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina.
It is anything BUT an even playing field.
The Republican ticket is guaranteed 40% of the vote even if their ticket consists of Charles Manson and Bernie Madoff.

(20,226 posts)not that right-wing and not that kooky. They want the appearance of stability - at least the vast majority of them. Even most of the Republican Party leadership will only fain support for Santorum like they did for Goldwater in 64 or the Democratic Party establishment did for McGovern in 72. Baring some unforeseen catastrophic (which admittedly is highly unlikely but not 100% impossible) it will be a complete blowout.

(33,497 posts)probably Kansas, North Dakota (SD could be competitive), West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, probably Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina & Georgia will also go to Santorum. Texas may actually be surprisingly competitive. So the GOP, no matter what, will win at least 15 states as a minimum with Santorum. So it really isn't a 80 or 84 blow out where Carter won six and Mondale one state.
