2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders is Sowing Dissent Among Democrats
one of the big reasons Bernie Sanders needs to be stopped is because he is sowing dissent among the party which is dangerous in a year during which the incumbent party is up for re-election. He's dividing the party among young and old, rich and poor. He wants to Europeanize politics, which if it is Bernie and Trump, Euro-left and Euro-right, we'll no longer be a sane political country; we'll have radical ideas and open race and class warfare. Not to mention, Bernie Sanders selling tax hikes would help Trump to the White House. If Bernie Sanders is the nominee, I don't know if I can vote for him.
The Clintons are party heroes, and the youngsters should show some honour to them if they want to vote in a Democratic primary.

(602 posts)I lost track of how many times I heard "The Clintons are party heroes" back in 2008. Yet not once, ever, could I get anyone to explain exactly why. Most often, I got a response similar to the op -- condescending, insulting, dismissive. More than once I was called a political dilettante and told I should just stay home if I couldn't support "these two amazing people." Ugh. I'm getting flashbacks now.

That dynamic changes when Bernie is in the generals because Bernie can say, " Just another billionaire taking advantage of free trade policies that need changed" Outsourcing etc. You can be scared of what the republicans may do, but I will be damned if I make a choice on what they think or could say. (6,960 posts)It is the Hillary campaign that specializes in Identity Politics ... half the posts here from Hillarians is about separating women and African-Americans from "white state" voters (that is from a Hillary supporter's post).
Sen. Sanders has been much more inclusive in his approach than Clinton. Hillarians may mock Sander's stance, but in the end a good job that pays at least a $15 minimum and affordable health insurance is important to everyone in this country.
What looks like dissent is the consequences of the Clinton political machine trying to steamroller any opposition into 'silent loyalty'.
Well, regular folks aren't having it -- we are all in this together -- it is the Sanders campaign that is being successful with that message.

Reports of a "fracture" are greatly exaggerated. There are those who are moved by someone who is willing to address (what used to be) the middle class, and those who look at politics as a football game. And then there are hundreds of thousands in between.

(31,935 posts)Bernie has a long history of uniting people from every side. The Clintons are one of the most divisive political dynasties in history. The DLC wormed their way into the Democratic Party as "Ex-Republicans" who wanted to "Make the DNC more business friendly", but many also said that the third way's intent was to "destroy liberalism in America", thereby making it a one party government. They've nearly succeeded, but many of us DON'T fall for the establishment bullshit spewed 24/7 on cable TV. The Clintons are not and never have been "party heroes" any more than their dear friends the Bushes are "party heroes" for the GOP.
And no, Bernie would NOT "raise taxes" on the vast majority of Americans. Most Americans would end up with more money in their pockets! See for yourself: www.BernieTax.com
Have you ever BEEN to Europe, or Scandinavia, or even South Africa? They GET MORE for their tax dollars than we do by a long shot.

(11,546 posts)"dangerous in a year during which the incumbent party is up for re-election" - good. Get rid of the old and bring on new Bernie type Dems like Tim Canova!
"He's dividing the party among young and old, rich and poor" - um, the divide was there prior to Bernie and it will be there whether he is there or not.
"He wants to Europeanize politics" - sounds AWESOME to me!! I was in Europe last month. Healthcare, 4-6 weeks of paid vacations, paid maternity and paternity leaves, great transportation and infrastructure, retirement and PENSIONS!! I'll take it.
"open race and class warfare" - yes and about damn time....
"selling tax hikes" - nope! Read his plans. A middle class family takes home more under his plans than they are taxed.
"I don't know if I can vote for him." - okay. Well, that's a personal decision.
"The Clintons are party heroes, and the youngsters should show some honour to them" - LOL!!!!!! Oh yeah, now THAT is funny!! Their years of lies and deceit have ruined the party and made it into a corporate crap fest. People have been leaving the party in droves because of their Third Way politics. Young people are a lot smarter than you give them credit for. Oh - and there doesn't have to be some damn party loyalty oath at the polling booth! As long as they follow their states laws, they can vote. I ONLY registered as a Dem in order to vote for Bernie. IF he doesn't win, I will be an Indy again. If that doesn't fit your idea of loyalty, too bad. I don't think that the Clintons deserve a thing from me.
Betty Karlson
(7,231 posts)Sanders isn't sowing the dissent: he is articulating it. It's third Way policy that has been sowing grounds for dissent for thirty years, which is why the Millennials (who have known nothing BUT Third Way policies) are so angry.
European policies will make us "no longer a sane political country" - as opposed to the status quo, with its 15 % poverty rate, and growing income disparity, and vast economic volatility? Yes, that sounds very... sane...
Radical ideas? - I agree, it is so radical to believe that democracy should not be bought by a couple of billionaires. Financial feodalism is the way to go.
Open race and class warfare? That's what we have now, with police shooting unarmed teenagers with impunity, and the middle class and working poor suffering more with every day. Hypocrisy is staring you in the face, dude.
All polls indicate that Sanders would bury Trump in a landslide, whereas Clinton would barely stay ahead of him. If you worry about the White House, vote Sanders.
You don't know if you can vote for him? 14 % of registered democrats feel the same about Clinton, and that's nothing compared to the independents, who hate her guts by a landslide. You want to stay at home on election day? Well, by the sound of your arguments you must have a lovely and rich home. So feel free to spend some quality time there, counting your oversized income.
The Clintons are party heroes? In their dreams, and maybe in the elite circles they like to frequent. Are those the circles you consider to represent the party? Here is news for you: 74% of all millennials are fed up with the status quo. You nominate the status quo candidate, and the party won't have a future base left.
Show some honour to the Clintons? Or else we won't be allowed to vote in the primaries? Do you know how arrogant and entitled, not to mention petty, you sound? I don't owe the Clintons anything, because they have been enabling the decline of my generation. If you screw me, I won't vote for you. If you screw me with lube, I still won't vote for you. It is that simple.
And you, dude, are clueless if you think this petty protest is going to get Clinton any votes. F*CK THAT SH*T!

(6,007 posts)It's like total delusion, of the kind and scale you see amongst Republicans. Black is white, up is down. . wacko.
It was Bill Clinton who got rid of Glass-Steagel and allowed the banks to crash our economy. It was Clinton who signed all those "tough on crime" bills that made us the country with the most prisoners and that high AA percentage of prisoners. And he signed the Communications bill that allowed the media to go to hell. And NAFTA that ruined our manufacturing, I think Bernie says that 60,000 companies left the country. Don't forget welfare reform that destroyed the social safety net. It goes on and on.
We had 8 years of him and 8 years of Obama and the wages for the American workers have not gone up. That's 16 of the last 24 years and YOUR wages have not gone up, but the corporations are raking it in at historical rates and, thank GOD, the Koch brother's wealth DOUBLED under Obama. So they should be honoring the Democrats but not regular Americans who are working harder and longer and getting paid less. Whoopie for those "incremental' changes, which amount to no changes at all in reality.

(9,888 posts)vote for Sanders, although I lean Hillary, but I fear he will not win against Trump. Neither of these guys' more outrageous positions will survive their first briefing as president-elect I'm actually more concerned about the Senate, which could flip under the right circumstances. I see a Trump/Sanders GE as completely unpredictable at this point, as there really is no precedent in recent times. A many times Senator and a real estate billionaire both running as "anti-establishment" candidates. Who will turn out beyond their core constituencies and who will stay home is anybody's guess.

(6,007 posts)"outrageous positions"
Free college -- we used to have free college, someone like Jefferson set up the first land grant colleges.
Universal healthcare -- every developed nation on earth has that and they pay half what we do and they get better results.
NOTHING he has proposed it "outrageous". AND he put out how he will pay for it all and it will involve no new taxes for those who make under $250,000, Most people will SAVE money because they will be paying nothing for healthcare.
Bernie is the only candidate who has been shown to BEAT EVERY GOP candidate in polls for months now, by large margins. It is Clinton who does not beat them.
And another talking point myth you have bought into is the voters. Bernie regularly gets 20% of the REPUBLICAN vote in Vermont. He polls well with the independents AND in the last couple of weeks he has broken voter turnout records in Kansas, Maine and now Michigan.
So, try to get your mind cleared of all the lies put out by the Clinton campaign. Truth may be hard to come by, but it is a good, strong basis to have.

(46,179 posts)The dissent has been there since the neo-liberal takeover a couple of decades ago. He's just overpowering the silencing machine within the party. We can no longer be patronized, demeaned, marginalized and hidden.
The Clintons are part of that neo-liberal takeover, and therefore part of the destruction of this party. Sanders gives the party a chance for relevance. I'm glad to see so many young people leading the charge against the neo-liberalism that got us where we are today. Whether or not Sanders wins or loses this year, they're going to be voters for a long time, and my greatest hope is that they will bring an end to the neo-liberal era in the Democratic Party.

(10,123 posts)deception. Please ask her to stop embarrassing us with that kind of behavior. We've already had one Clinton defile the Oval office with unsavory behavior and lies. We don't need another.
If she wants to carry on Obama's presidency, she can start by demonstrating doing so with Obama's good character and integrity. I realize that's a real challenge for someone as chronically dishonest as Hillary but that's the foundation required for legitimately taking the baton from Barack. I do not see why Americans should settle for any less. That's the key reason Americans went for Obama over Hillary in the first place.
If she's not up to it, which it appears from her behavior in this campaign, why doesn't she step aside. Because in Bernie, we have a candidate who is up to it and will do a great job without embarrassing us.

Bottom Line: Americans are waking up from "machine politics". Many now see that the establishment Right or Left are the same. It is all about/for them and to heck with the rest of the country.
The Repugs can't fall over themselves fast enough to destroy Trump. He has tapped into this mistrust and "I'm not going to take this anymore" feeling and they are terrified. The exact same for the IdiotDems. Hillary IS the problem. The Clintons' ARE the machine. Trump is not (and Bernie to a lesser degree) and that is why people are drawn to them. The more the establishment attacks, the better they look in the eyes of the public.
If we must no longer have a "sane political country" to throw off the shackles of the establishment, so be it. Remember the goal is power over the masses. Always has been and the establishment will do whatever it takes to keep it.

(462 posts)What I find hilarious is this: "sowing dissent among the party ... dividing the party among young and old" followed up by "the youngsters should show some honour to them if they want to vote in a Democratic primary".
That is just hilariously hypocritical and condescending.

(14,689 posts)What type of honour should I show the Clintons? They are public servants. I don't owe them anything.
If anyone is dividing this primary on racial lines, it's the Clinton side.

Deal with the fact that in a democracy, people get to vote for the person THEY believe is not the person YOU support. Being the party's nominee is not something we take turns with. =
I have voted in presidential elections since 1984. In every election, except 2008 & 2012, there was a Bush or a Clinton on the ticket. I'm sick of this political dynasty bull shit.
I don't owe the Clintons a god-damned thing.

(1,884 posts)That is the power of Bernie Sanders. We know this because he speaks the truth, using facts. No one else running is using as much truth and facts in their campaign as Bernie.
This is the first time in decades we've had a choice other than the lesser of the evils. Let's not squander it.

"If the Democratic party moves left we will not have sane politics in this country. Societal collapse! Anarchy! We must stay to the right! Fear The Bernie!"

(115,683 posts)You know, sometimes several candidates from the same party will run against each other in order to be chosen as the presidential candidate in the general election. We call this process primary elections. Because the candidates are running against each other, they usually will disagree on various issues, even if they support, more or less, their party's basic positions. When a candidate disagrees with another candidate he is not "sowing dissent." He is trying to persuade voters that his positions on the issues are better than the other candidate's. Here is the clue you obviously need: This is what the goddamn f*cking primary elections are for! Disagreeing with Hillary is not sowing dissent; it's competing to be the party's goddamn nominee!
Jeez.

(5,792 posts)What in the hell are you talking about. Bernie wants for the American people what they should have. He is not dividing...that is pure bs. He is telling the truth. He is not the elitist 1% who want power after they have all the money they need and want. He is what is good about America. Don't vote for him if that is what you want but there will be plenty who do.
