2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWonderful! Bernie gets a warm standing ovation at the end of the debate!!!
When he went into the crowd, he was mobbed and you could see this large group of lit-up phones trying to get pictures taken of him. A beautiful sight!
Then, with the debate finished, the crowd began loudly chanting, "Bernie! Bernie! Bernie!"
I know these were small moments, but I just have this feeling. I have a really good feeling that the tide is turning for Sanders.
It feels like an ON switch has been flipped for him.
Anyone else feeling it?!

(50,986 posts)Yes. I think the shift is realized. I think the more desperate Hillary becomes attacking Sanders the more ground Sanders gains. She becomes desperate and mean because she's desperate, but he just keep talking about the urgency of economic democracy.
I was going to suggest that Hillary fire her campaign staff but then I think the better arrangement is for her staff to fire her.
She was mean and low-down tonight.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)She made me literally sick tonight. There was one lie she told (it was quick and I didn't catch what she said) and Bernie just about blew up (you could tell he was flabbergasted that she would say something like that), but he held it in, and then they let her keep going and when he finally got to respond it was about something else she said. I don't think he ever got a chance to correct her...I'll watch for that tomorrow. I couldn't do a replay to figure it out. It was near the end of the debate. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
On edit...after watching a replay, the lie she told that pissed him off so much was that he supported the minutemen. Her behavior in this debate was disgusting. Just disgusting.
How can anyone think this woman should be our president?

(35,688 posts)I didn't get to see the end of the debate, so I was so curious about it, based on the comments made here tonight.
There is a point where she smiles, but as the cheering goes on, her smile fades into an expression that looks like, "The stuff I have to put up with!"

That is exactly the look on her face!! At first when she's faced with the audience giving Bernie a standing ovation and loud cheers--she does the smile-and-cackle routine. When she can no longer hold the fake smile, her true feeling surface.
I love your take on it. The look on her face was priceless.
I think the Internet will have a field day with it.

(4,389 posts)At the end of Bernie Sanders closing statement at tonights Democratic Debate in Florida, the audience gave him a standing ovation.
As the crowd was cheering and chanting Sanders name, the Vermont senator smiled sheepishly, while Hillary Clinton was seen laughing nervously, looking visibly uncomfortable.

(8,791 posts)But she brought and brings this on herself.
Clinton may well be our nominee and win the POTUS.
But people will still not like nor trust her for good reason.
The dislike and trust will blunt her effectiveness and negatively impact Congress and other down ticket elections even though Clinton will support more GOP policies than will Sanders.
Clinton may well be our nominee and lose the POTUS to Trump to the GOP and this would be a total and unnecessary disaster.
I don't get many of the Clinton supporters here at DU.
Why do they want a candidate that a majority of us do not like and they have to know themselves that she cannot be trusted?
For me it is not that I am for Sanders but I would support nearly anyone over Hillary Clinton except Trump or GOP or other conservatives.
Look back at old DU in 2008 where I repeatedly typed that she was my #9 candidate.
Hillary Clinton frankly had 2008 in hand but she blew it just like she is messing up he own chances in 2016.
Unbelievable. She is not suited to be POTUS.
Good for Bernie Sanders. He is looking more presidential every day.

(15,435 posts)when I said that we've had groups of people who've gotten together here in Florida since early December 2015. There are rallies, sign holding, phone banking and events that have been going on in this Red County. He's not the nominee yet and people are willing to come out and work FOR him because "We Believe" he's what the country needs.
I know last August I was on vacation in the Keys with my family and everyone liked him, but they told HE COULDN'T get elected. I had taken my computer down there and was showing them pictures of the Rallies he was having with so many thousands of people. I told them that I knew what they meant because everyone was going to try to stop him. I kept seeing there were more rallies after I came home. I ordered bumper stickers and shirts back then and waited a long time to get them. Maybe because it was the beginning.
All of us here haven't wavered and when THEY still have tried to come after him we send him money, like he said he needs us. And we keep responding time after time after time. How many here have done that for ANY candidate in the past. I even started giving to him monthly which is something I NEVER did in my life. And when he said he needed us to help more, I tried to find an extra $50 to add to what I was giving.
Then my family and grand kids began to come on board and my son-in-law told me my daughter told him "maybe my mother is right." I thought they were registered as Democrats, but found out they were Independents and they quickly changed their affiliation to vote in the Primaries here. My grand kids were registered as Democrats and they're millennials who were first attracted to Trump. They got their absentees and have already voted for him. My son and his wife just sent their absentee ballots in for Bernie. Other people I've contacted switched to Dems too to vote for him. They weren't aware that FL is a closed Primary state and I'm glad we got them in time. Getting this message out and informing people have gotten even more people signed up.
Then when I called the Supervisor of Elections about people mailing their re-registrations I was told they had to hand deliver the changes, I was told the line was out the door. I've wondered ever since then if it was Independ. switching to vote for Trump or Bernie, but THEY have been switching here. Still don't know who the ones I don't know are switching for, but re-registering seemed heavy here.
The Bernie numbers here out number the Hillary people, I think we know it. We've been "Feeling The Bern" for months now. Finally people are seeing him and it DOES feel like they're FEELING THE BERN!
I'm afraid to hope because I know many here have seen what TPTB, MSM, The Clinton Machine, The DNC and so many have been doing to STOP him it's scary to HOPE.
The light switch seems to be blinking more and more. FL is really a BIG DEAL and I'm afraid to HOPE he'll win. He's been FANTASTIC and he's doing it for THIS COUNTRY! Please let this happen!

(1,898 posts)Despite DWS' best efforts to stack the audience, it was clear that the majority of the most vocal members of the audience were Sandinistas.
On a related note, CNN did a HORRIBLE job with the audio mix for the interpreters. Fortunately, I am bilingual and actually benefited hearing from the woman from Central America whose husband was deported. The angst in her voice poured through the TV screen when offered in the original Spanish. I was touched.
I also noticed a noteworthy difference in Hill's overall body language when we knew that no one on her team had provided any of the questions in advance.

(8,812 posts)She doesn't seem to connect well with people and although she still has considerable support from the Establishment, it appears as though her approach to politics is doomed to go the way of the Dodo.
That must be a very hard reality to face.
It's like an aging athlete who suddenly realizes that despite all his years in the game that he's never going to make it to the World Series or the Stanley Cup Finals. I think the ovation brought it home to her then in a way that it hadn't up to that point.
I don't think she's going to get the nomination. And in the event that she does, she will lose to the Republicans.
