Hillary, Bernie and debate moderators of service to Democrats by raising "unfair" criticisms
The primaries are the time to find answers to potential unfair criticisms in the general election. Raising the email server, or Bernie's praise of Fidel Castro, Hillary's ties to Wall Street and various ways to interpret or misinterpret each others votes needs to be raised and addressed NOW, not in August or September. Compelling answers, if available, have to be made to preempt GOP attacks.
So most of the "unfair" "lies" and "bias" are really just useful parts of the political process, as long as they are effectively parried.
The key is to avoid extremely effective "Willie Horton" type ads by Lee Atwater and friends against Dukakis in 1988, derived from a general criticism of the Massachusetts furlough program originally used by Al Gore in the primaries, and never really addressed by Dukakis. Atwater said he would make Horton, "Dukakis's running mate." Dukakis was way ahead of Bush in the polls in 1988 during the summer, before the onslaught of attack ads began.
