Hillary town hall gaffe alert, "We're going to put a lot of coal miners...out of business"

Last edited Mon Mar 14, 2016, 01:58 AM - Edit history (1)

Conservative media, and WV Dems already jumping all over this ready-made attack ad.

http://twitchy.com/2016/03/13/watch-were-going-to-put-a-lot-of-coal-miners-and-coal-companies-out-of-business-hillary-clinton/

The kicker, the question posed to her had NOTHING to do with coal. It was a softball suggestion she pitch herself to poor white voters. Why voluntarily bring up the coal issue, particularly when the impacted states haven't even voted yet?!?!

Not a "natural politician". Yeah, we're noticing.

And she SEES all those connections in her head when she looks at an issue. It's natural, and it's a very rare talent. But the mark of really having MASTERED it is that you know when to shut up and FOCUS..and don't try to get others to see what she sees, because it's too complicated and people get lost trying to follow how fast her thought process is actually moving. She needs to slow down and nit get bogged down in the chaos of multiple vector points; most people are not as smart as she is and cannot keep up. This isn't a slam. It's just how some minds work. I respect it a lot. But when she isn't paying enough attention she says dumb stuff like this.

She NEEDED to say, yeah, people in coal country will lose their jobs. When that happens, they will be the first new hires at the local Solar Panel factory that the Federal Government is going to build here. Lots of long-term jobs NOT tearing the planet apart for burnable dirt. At comparable wages to what they're earning now, that's a pretty good deal and you'd be silly not to vote for that.

But she didn't say any of that to my knowledge. So there's that...

I think she suffers from the same problem as Obama, too much advice from too constricted a viewpoint.

However being a little too blunt with your message isn't going to win any favors. SHould have used language like going to transition coal companies to become energy companies - coal mine workers to become energy workers - to train and work on the new renewable and alternative energy sources. Use gas and nuclear as the bridge between coal and 100% renewables.

Yes, American coal is cheap and plentiful... but it is dirty. I don't know how much coal gasification makes it cleaner (or not) because I haven't read up on the subject. I do know about coal gasification because before North Sea gas came available in the UK gas was coal-gas and gas appliances had to be converted to run on the North Sea gas.

8. She's talking about TiSA and GATS
Sun Mar 13, 2016, 11:24 PM
Mar 2016

Thats going to happen a lot, I bet. She wants to force wages down with her and Bill's legacy, a 20 year long negotiated trade deal on services whose bait has been the prospect of being able to win contracts in developed countries like the US by being the lowest qualified bidder in international competitive bidding. Maybe not coal miners at first, unless some government money is nvolved.. but its entirely possible it could happen in fields that they have declared are suffering labor shortages 9which likely would happen if wages dropped really low in response to a secondary effect of workers in the public sector being replaced by very low wage subcontractors) Due to supply and demand, when more people want a job than are jobs - wages fall, they could fall a lot.

GATS and tiSA are neoliberal shock treatment, globalization of services. it will be a nightmare for many Americans.

This is what Bernie said by Americans should not be forced to compete directly with people who make really low wages for the same jobs. I am not doubting that they could do the work but its like a stab in the back to millions of middle class workers many who carry a lot of debt.

our extremely bloated, expensive military.

They know not what they do.

They can't reckon beyond their noses.

A bunch of fools.

You can't maintain our military without a lot of tax revenue, and when you outsource and export the middle class jobs that pay enough to allow people to pay taxes and still subsist, you lose great amounts of tax revenue.

Poof! Money for things like scientific research (including health) but most certainly the military is simply not there.

It's a little complex for the likes of the Clintons, but it is the real problem with international trade that has gone too far and is going to destroy our country.

Everything, including trade, in moderation. The Clintons are not moderates when it comes to trade. They would like to just sell our economy out.

We cannot afford another neo-con president. We cannot afford Hillary.

Especially given that it seems to be such a rare occasion for her.

Disregarding the crap about being "the only candidate" and other hyperbole, moving away from fossil fuels will put coal miners out of work. My understanding of what she was saying (and maybe I "misheard&quot was an admission of that, and saying she had a plan to help mitigate their job losses. Given that, while it sounded very inartful, it's not something I would get riled up about.

What I would get riled up about would probably be the help she's proposing. If it's anything like the assistance that came after NAFTA, then she can keep it. I watched factories and manufacturing leave cities and towns, and carpetbagger "training" companies and the like move in, offering expensive training that proved worthless to most of those who lost ther jobs. Usually it was priced at exactly what the gov't was paying, but occasionally they'd hook those people for even more.

What's wrong with her? The thing I noticed most is that as soon as she said it a look came over her face that screamed, "Oh shit, I've done it again." Then she tried to clean it up by talking clean energy jobs, but the damage was done. Her admission about not being a natural politician showed up in neon lights.

61. No, if she were talking conservative centrist like a republican, it would come natural to her.

Its when she tries to be a fake progressive liberal, she screws it all up.

Remember the infamous~

It's not businesses that create jobs. ~Hillary Clinton

That still cracks me up.

right wing cudgel to try to bash HRC? Frankly, this is as dishonest as Romney taking one sentence in which Obama, in the prior campaign, said something like "McCain won't talk about the economy. His people are saying "If we talk about the economy, we'll lose," and shortening it in an ad to Obama saying "If we talk about the economy, we'll lose."
As for the one line you and Rand Paul and every right wing website out there are citing:
"The broader context is that Clinton introduced that comment by saying she is "the only candidate which has a policy about how to bring economic opportunity using clean, renewable energy as the key into coal country," and that she has a plan to help those who stand to lose jobs.

"We're going to make it clear that we don't want to forget those people. Those people labored in those mines for generations, losing their health -- often losing their lives -- to turn on our lights and power our factories. Now we've got to move away from coal and all the other fossil fuels, but I don't want to move away from the people who did the best they could to produce the energy which we relied on."

The truth is that she was talking about developing jobs in the clean energy sector both as a goal in itself an also as a vehicle for creating jobs. She has spoken about this many times. For example:

Now, if you actually want to know more about what she has said about clean energy, you can start here:

Exactly.

I agree with Hillary on this issue.

A "gaffe" is mistakenly setting yourself up for easy political attack, which you have also noted happened with that awkwardly phrased point about coal mining.

Bernie made his gaffe with the "No poor white people" thing and it is now a meme. So i don't think that's what she intended.

I think people (including politicians) just f-up sometimes with their choice of words.

We need to stop burning that stuff. It is that simple. Come up with a retraining plan for workers in that industry and shut it all down. Coal sucks as a fuel. Period.
