When Romney did draw questions that offered opportunities to score big points, he often whiffednone bigger than the question about the presidents handling of Libya. Romney erroneously claimed that Obama had refused to call the assault on the U.S. embassy a terror attack until 14 days after it occurred, when in fact Obama did so the very next day. Crowleys correction and admonishment of Romneyand the crowds applausewere devastating. Romney slunk back to his stool looking utterly defeated.

Well, for the record, Mr. Romney, the President DID call it an act of terrorism the day after the attack. At the same time, they held off until they had more information before making statements about the actual events.
Rmoney is a dipshit to have blown what was a gift question. It's the one thing the GOP has been pushing over the last month.
He deserves to lose.

(13,992 posts)There are hundreds of embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions all around the globe and every last one of them is in contact with the State Department on any given day. And at the slightest sign of trouble, nearly all of them will report that they need enhanced security -- particuarly after the cuts to security budgets made by the Republicans.
So the idea that the President or even the Secretary of State is monitoring the moment-by-moment security conditions in every location and responding quickly to every perceived threat is a little ridiculous. Here's an interesting take on the subject from Fact Check

Key Point: The request came from the Embassy in Tripoli, and not from the Counsulate in Benghazi.
Key Point: The security team at the State Department said that the increased security available, a 16-man unit, probably would have been overwhelmed in the attack in any case.
Key Point: The U.S. was trying to use Libyan security forces to reduce the visibility of, and possible violence directed towards, uniformed U.S. troops in the country.

(2,795 posts)Obama was strong and straightforward accepting responsibility without excuses and not blaming attacks on anything other than terrorists he will bring to justice. Repubs have been shameless and hypocritical in politicizing the attack instead of rallying around US as Dem politicians did after Sept 11 2001. Romney and Repubs have been salivating with glee to have a foreign policy situation to exploit just like they have cheered any bad economic news and discredited and downplayed all the good news.
I watched the news reports in the wake of the attack and the reporting all emphasized the protests against the film going on all over the middle east and indicating that protests against the film were also involved in Libya but hijacked by militia terrorists. So it is no wonder the Administration needed time to find out the details but Romney and Repubs couldn't wait to jump in to manipulate this tragedy to paint Obama's entire foreign policy as a total failure.
I hope Obama smacks down Romney again next week for his disgusting bluster and unpatriotic politicizing.
