2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy 9 year old daughter seems to be a liberal
I let her watch about 30 minutes of the debate last night. Whenever they mentioned opening up additional federal lands to drilling, she said we need to conserve some land for nature. She is huge on recycling and would kick my butt if I put a recyclable item in the regular trash. She also wants to join the Green Team at school.
I haven't influenced here in any way. I am very proud of her.

(25,415 posts)They told me that while watching some of the DNC with me. They already have very particular views on the environment, women's rights and racism. They especially hate being told that because they are girls there are things they can't do. They are wonderful kids who have a big interest in the world around them. And let's face it, Obama and Biden relate to kids so much better then Romney and Ryan do.

(11 posts)Although he can understand English, my 8 year old son's native language is German and he has no inkling to be able to follow a political debate in English...but as we were watching the other evening he said to me - referring to Romney - "Der da darf nicht König sein" (That one can't be King). I asked him why not - and he simply said "Er sieht zu door aus." (He looks too dumb..!)

(22,000 posts)I remember watching the 1984 Democratic Convention, I was only 13 at the time. Neither of my parents were involved in politics in any way other then voting (and even then I never talked to them about it). For many years I thought my dad was a Republican. It was only a few years before he died that he told me he was a Democrat (we had never been close until a few years before his death). I'm much more liberal than my mother (who is a Democrat and against abortion). Many different experiences have shaped how I look at things. My uncle was gay and died of AIDS about 20 years ago and I unfortunately never got to know him well. I grew up in a small town, which could explain my disdain for conservatives.
Now I live overseas and still stay involved. My mom still asks me about political stuff from time to time because she knows that's one of the things I pay attention to. Which reminds me, I have to email her all my recommendations for the ballot measures....
