Obama picks McCormick Place for election night rally

By Rick Pearson
Tribune reporter

President Barack Obama plans to hold his election-night rally at Chicago’s McCormick Place convention center, a move aimed at easing concerns over weather and security, sources with knowledge of the event said Wednesday.

Given the indoor location, the event seems unlikely to match the electric atmosphere of Obama’s 2008 outdoor victory rally in Grant Park. That event drew an estimated 240,000 people downtown and created picturesque images of the city’s skyline that were seen worldwide.

While the decision to use McCormick Place will tamp down the crowd size, it will provide the president with greater security.

Spontaneous parties in the streets of every major city. People crying, hugging strangers, celebrating like mad.

If we're fortunate enough to win again the feeling is going to be one of relief rather than unbridled joy.

McCormick Place is an ugly, soul-less, corporate space . I get why they're doing this, but it's no Grant Park.

Yep. We never know how the flying monkeys will respond when The President wins. Their nuttiness over the last four years has concerned me greatly. If Romney's kid can talk about getting up and punching the President, why can't a flying monkey take it further?
