2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMitt Romney’s boldest claims — that his new jobs plan will create 12 million jobs — falls apart.
Quizzed about the claim by Washington Posts fact-checker Glenn Kessler, the Romney campaign cited three separate studies that, taken together, include numbers that add up to 12 million jobs created. But as Kessler found, the studies employ different time frames, and two of them have no bearing on Romneys policies.
And, it turns out, not all of the authors believe their research helps justify Romneys conclusion either.
I think the WP [Washington Post] story says it all, said Ed Morse, a managing director at Citigroup Global Markets, in an email. I have no comment to add.
Romney claims that Morses Citigroup study proves hell create 3 million jobs. But the paper actually concludes that the economy will add 2.7 million to 3.6 million energy jobs over the next eight years if existing policies, including fuel efficiency standards that Romney opposes, are continued.
The Romney campaign cites a second study by Rice University professor John Diamond, predicting that the Republican candidates tax reform plan will spark massive growth and create 7 million jobs over 10 years. He stands by his conclusion, which is far more optimistic than most economists, and takes no issue with Romney citing them even if Romneys playing games with the time horizon.

The economy is currently generating about 150,000 private sector jobs/mo. Bush generated about 100,000/mo for his middle six years doing what Bush is proposing to do. Clinton did better.

(8,699 posts)The math and historic metrics from BLS show it to be a lie on its premise. 12 million jobs in 4 years is an average of 250,000 jobs a month, EVERY MONTH, for 4 years straight. You can go back 50 years...70 years...never happened. EVER. It's an absurd contention on Rmoney's part. Facts matter. The 47% matter. You matter. Vote.

(4,551 posts)Romney STILL mentioned the LIE in the debate!
And unfortunately Obama didn't get around to correcting that one. Romney won on the issue of the economy in the debate according to the polls.
That's one issue Obama has to keep an eye on. He needs to point out the following:
1. The Washington Post fact-checker gave the 12 Million Jobs number 4 Pinnochios
2. CNN Financial anchor Ali Velshi also says Romney's claim is nonsense
3. Reagan Budget Director David Stockman also called out the nonsense in Romney's plan this week
