Related: About this forumAnn Romney: Mormon missions and U.S. military are ‘different ways of serving’
The candidates wife explained that Mormon missions were like military service in that youre going outside of yourself, youre working and youre helping others. And it changes you. And are we so grateful in this country for those people men and women that are volunteering, theyre sacrificing their life for us, and we cannot forget that or we have to acknowledge that always.
So, when youre facing these mothers whose children have not come back, how will you explain to them that your sons havent gone? Goldberg pressed. Will you talk about the missions theyve gone on?
I would say its probably the hardest thing that a president and a first lady probably do is to comfort those that have lost a love one and have gone in harms way, Ann Romney replied, not directly answering the question. It is an amazing country, we have the most extraordinary fighting men and women, and we have to be so grateful for them. Of course, its hard, and I dont think that any of us can understand the sacrifice [sic] that are being made by families.

The Romney's should be ashamed!
Tell that to a soldier coming home with traumatic brain injuries.

(5 posts)Her equating her BOYS going door-to-door to sell a religion, and MEN enlisting
in the military as a soldier, who is trained to go to battle and is ready to risk his life
for his country is ASTOUNDING. She doesn't live in the REAL world.
Showed complete ignorance and DISRESPECT for entire Military and all Armed Forces.

(115,704 posts)They are not like the missionaries of many other faiths, who actually do something useful in other countries, like build houses or schools or provide medical care and food. I'm not a big fan of anybody trying to push their faith and customs on other cultures, but at least the other churches offer help along with their doctrine. But all the Mormons do is go door to door, handing out nothing but religious tracts. No food, no medicine, no help. Who, exactly, are they helping other than their weird-ass church?

(801 posts)There is NO comparison. Mormon missionaries are not serving their country. They are prostelithizing their religion. Nothing wrong with that but it is absolutely not the same thing as serving in the military!

(9,600 posts)This is an insult toward all military members. The Romney's and their whole family are living off of the sacrifice of the brave men and women of the military. How can she so easily equate keeping her sons safe and happy while another mother loses her child for the benefit of the nation? Equal?

(5,049 posts)This belief is not unique to Ann - plenty of Mormons will tell you exactly the same thing. In fact, it was not uncommon for young Mormon men to avoid the draft and military duty by serving a Mission. Obviously - there were young Mormon men that did serve their country through military duty, but many I knew during the Vietnam era served an LDS mission instead of joining up or being drafted.
The bigger question is - how can two such completely out of touch people ever be trusted in the White House?

Isn't it time to hit him more over this?
Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) did a little bit of work in that direction a couple of weeks ago, but I would like to see him do more. And for Sen. John Kerry and others to join in.
Expose the fact that Romney, nor his 5 sons, have ever served in the military.

(5 posts)After seeing a tape of Ann Romney on "View", you can't help feel:
No matter HOW MUCH she speaks, she has no REAL point of view, or anything to say.
She can't respond with "You'll have to ask Mitt" after he suddenly bailed out of HIS appearance.
This woman wanted a daughter badly... but gave up after giving birth to five little clones of Mitt.
Can't say he would "Move Heaven and Earth" for country as President, when Romney once had
used same analogy.... we shouldn't "Move Heaven and Earth" to HUNT AND PURSUE BIN-LADEN.

(11,198 posts)I don't get Whoopies point . . . Serving in the military is, thankfully, not a a requirement to be President. Obama, Clinton and Reagan -- in recent history -- were not in the military. Well, unless you count Ronnie's movie roles.

One serves your own selfish desires and the other serves ( or should serve) the good of the country as a WHOLE.

(32,062 posts)and especially those on the front lines. When folks join the US Military they are not only giving up many of their own rights but also putting their lives on the line - particularly when sent into combat zones. That she can compare bicycling in France to convert folks to her religion (imaginary musings) vs. willingness to die for your country shows an amazing lack of sanity.
