Romney in denial about climate change
To the Editor:
Two days ago I received a call from the campaign to elect Mitt Romney. When I asked the gentleman on the phone what Mr. Romney's position was on global climate change as it relates to human activity, he offered the opinion that "if mother nature wants to warm the planet, that's her prerogative and we will adjust."
When I pressed him about the connection with human activity's impact on the subject, he assured me "that has been disproven." He further mentioned removing regulatory power from the EPA because some of their regulations are "damaging to the local economy" and that the pollution in the Great Bay can be dealt with through a privately funded oyster project alone.
Wow! Complete head-in-the-sand denial of science. Personally, I believe these are nonpartisan issues and I think any rational person can agree they need to be addressed at a national (and local) level, regardless of who is president. The fact that a large part of our country is in severe drought seems like an important national security issue to me. I think a reasonable person will agree that rising oceans will have a large impact on our economy and that we need to be addressing the reality of human cause.
Choosing to live in a fantasy world will not change reality and that strategy is not fair to our children. I understand why people want to deceive themselves because it's really difficult to make the necessary changes and investments to change direction. I have three young kids who are depending on me to operate in a reality based fashion. I wish I could tell them it's all just fine and we can continue to burn oil and coal for all eternity, but that isn't true.
We are all tied together on this and we need to work together, face the truth and do something about it. I think it's clear Mitt Romney has a little more evolving to do before I could trust him in the role of our nation's leader.
