2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe economy is starting to perk up, Mr. Romney
Lower unemployment, housing market improving, consumer spending up, corporate profits up, exports up, stock market good. With the present global financial climate the US is holding its own.

(801 posts)The media isn't talking about it enough, so we need to tweet and get the word out everywhere!

(28,627 posts)Obama did talk about exports in the debate but we need to put ads on TV giving short snappy soundbytes on the improving economy.

(62 posts)Any positive news is either totally ignored or barely given mention in the media. I like to think this could change between now and the election, but am not holding my breath.
For example, if the Dow Jones Industrial average rises 200 points, it is not news at all; but if it declines 200 points, according to the media this is President Obama's fault. If unemployment falls by a percentage point, it is a conspiracy; but if it rises it is the fault of the President.
Sometimes when I get depressed I think it will be a "miracle" if we win. But, I do believe in Miracles!!

(10,718 posts)Every month we get the big jobs report, and its been in positive territory for 31 months straight, but the media almost universally paints it as "disappointing". When we have a significant drop in the unemployment rate, its not reported as a piece of good news, its reported as a controversial claim. When GDP growth comes in at 2%, which is better than the global average for the past 5 years and better than any other developed country at the moment, that's weak and disappointing too.
...and so forth. Most of the republicans I know are convinced the country has been stuck in a recession for four years, and the economic stimulus only made things worse. When Romeny talks about "turning things around" and how Obama has failed, he has all the moral support he needs from the idiots in the media.

The restaurant, too.

(7,724 posts)Whole Foods was packed, and then we had trouble finding a parking space at the little strip mall with the Wawa and we speculated it was overflow parking for the 2 bar/restaurants across the street. Then driving through the little historical burb outside of Philly near where we live was hopping as well.

Guess he'll have to attempt to win the election by lying.

(7,724 posts)They got a buyer, retooled it, and what could've been a disaster for us, now is a job he'll be able to work till retirement. Lots of OT, as well.
Things were so tight at one point, I wasn't going to the dentist, skipping other important things to conserve the gas in my tank till the next paycheck, cutting it extremely close on paying utilites to the point of getting shut off notices We're talking about buying a truck next year, finishing the remodel on our bedroom and other parts of the house. We may even rent a house down the shore for a week next summer as our vacation for the kids and grandkids. Maybe. Things really feel like they're getting better.

(5,008 posts)It seems like people have made up their minds. I still for the life of my can't understand why people would say they approve of the job that he is doing (50-53% in some polls that I have seen) but when asked who they will vote for they do not choose him. Meaning the approval rating is higher than his percentage of the vote in the poll. It just makes very little sense to me. Unless the pundits are right and people have already made their minds up regardless if the economy is rebounding. I just don't understand that if thinks are improving, why would you want to change in the middle of the recovery. I could understand if there was not progress. It just sucks to consider that he might be voted out when the economy is improving. I can't understand how people could give a disaster like GW Bush two terms and end up giving Obama one based upon the economy that Bush/the Republicans destroyed with their policies.

(550 posts)Have Obama leading with room to spare. Now, the hyper motivated GOP fan base will obviously make it closer than it would be in a rational circumstance, but I suspect the LV models are undercutting Obama more than they should be.
