Related: About this forumNot just a handful: THOUSANDS of voter registration forms found in VA dumpster.
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/10/19/third-instance-of-voter-registration-dumping-found-in-virginia/A third instance of fraudulent voter registration has been uncovered in the important swing state of Virginia, where a Republican consultant has been arrested and thousands of discarded voter registration forms were recovered from a dumpster earlier this week. According to the Not Larry Sabato blog, a law student at James Madison University registered to vote on campus, but found when she tried to verify the change online, found that her form had never been submitted.
On Thursday, Raw Story reported that 31-year-old Colin Small, a Republican operative employed by Pinpoint, a firm contracted by Republican Party of Virginia, was arrested and charged with four counts of destruction of voter registration applications, eight counts of disclosure of voter registration application, and one count of obstruction of justice for throwing active voter registration forms into a dumpster.
Not Larry Sabato blogger Ben Trippett wrote that 2 to 3 weeks ago, a woman, identified only by her first name, Lucy, attempted to update her voter registration at a table on the campus of James Madison University.
She stopped to fill out a voter registration form to change her voting address from her parents house in Fairfax to her dorm address in Harrisonburg so she could vote in person on election day, wrote Trippett. On Wednesday night Lucy went online to check her voter registration status and found out she had not been registered in Harrisonburg- meaning whoever was collecting her form on campus had not turned it in.

(67,421 posts)one is not applying for multiple/exclusionary jurisdictions or attempting to vote more than once. it should be PRESUMED that on street type voter registrations may be lost, stolen, or dumped, and the person registering should not be penalized when that happens.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Small, the arrested operative, was working as a supervisor as part of a registration operation in eight swing states financed by the Republican National Committee, run by a company called Strategic Allied Consulting. When questions arose about Strategics practices, including allegations of submitting forged forms and of dumping Democratic registrations, the RNC fired the company, at which point Small and his team were re-hired by the Republican Party of Virginia.

(9,126 posts)I know those are silly questions. Of course they aren't. But it shows how much more vote theft there is on the part of Republicans than voter fraud on the part of Democrats. Thousands compared to dozens.

(65,442 posts)to check their registration to make sure they have not been disenfranchised by these jerks.
In fact, the Democratic Party itself needs to run ads everywhere telling people that if they registered at one of those conveniently set up tables or with someone walking around registering people, they might not actually be registered after all and should check to make sure.
And those ads should include references to every one of the incidents discovered so far, as well as the information that in every case it was a Republican outfit destroying or discarding registrations for those deemed likely to be Democratic voters.
The MSM will not do anything to get that information out, so the Dems need to really spread it around.
On edit: I hope the law enforcement agencies will take these felonies seriously. They could easily flip these low-level lowlifes to turn state's evidence against the masterminds--maybe even all the way up to Rove himself. That is, i]if they actually have any desire to prevent the disenfranchisement of potential Democratic .
Unfortunately, I fear many who are in a position to pursue such investigations and prosecutions are not on the side of the angels in these matters.

(65,442 posts)and hope that somehow people will realize that their registration might be bogus.
People who think they have registered and those who think that their registration from past elections is still functional won't be thinking that they need to check whether their registration is valid, unless some organized effort is made by the Dems to spread the word that everyone needs to check their registration--especially new voters, of course, but all voters, really, because of the caging and purging tricks the Republicans are constantly using to drop registered Dem voters from the rolls.

(10,857 posts)The cutoff date for registration was at least a week ago and Republican lawyers will be able to tie up the issue for weeks or months.
Whatever repercussions come from this, those who are disenfranchised will remain so in this election, of that I am nearly sure.
If it's legal, I recommend instead taking a page out of President Obama's playbook and using the Republicans' own mechanism of corruption against the guilty.
Virginia is a "right to work" state, which really means workers have no rights at all and can be fired at any time. Communities that identify election thieves in their midst may well be able to contact the future employers of those people, and demand their immediate termination, or face reprisals like boycotts and protests. No Virginia business can afford that. If it's legal, I think we can ensure that these chumps never work outside of the GOP in Virginia, ever again.
Interestingly enough, I think there is another shoe to drop in this emerging scandal. Several Republican campaign workers have stopped by my store. You know what they all had in common?
They're all on food stamps. Apparently the GOP doesn't pay their workers a living wage, and has been encouraging their shutzstaffeln to apply for EBT cards instead.

(8,166 posts)What we are seeing is a slow-motion train wreck of what was once the greatest country in the world. I am sickened at what the right wing is doing to dismantle democracy. I know I've just invoked Godwin's Law

(3,577 posts)many people would never take that initiative because they don't know where to go or can't get there. I've registered many people like that outside of grocery stores and on the street. We do have same-day registration in Wisconsin, but at that point proof of residence is required and some people don't have utility bills in their name and so forth. Registering early saves them that hassle and also frees up the time of poll workers on election day.

They knowingly HIRED them after the other issues. And the guy who was caught also worked for the RNC for a while. I saw his pic.. "consultant" yea riiiight, looked like his last job was in fast food. Sort of a consultant, like Doug Kaplan at Gravis.

Thanks for signing. This is so important to us all.

(748 posts)I'm happy to spread truth. If there were "thousands" of registration forms found in dumpsters, then I want the story out. But I can't find anything about that by Googling, except for the one blog story cited here.
Does anyone have credible sourcing for there being more than a handful of forms thrown away? Even a handful is reprehensible, but I'd like to be reporting the truth if I'm going to spread the word.
kmlisle
(276 posts)Then report back if there is an irregularity. I already did this in Fla because of the news about registration fraud and I am ok but if thousands of DU members and friends did the same thing and if we had a central reporting point that would be a way to uncover more evidence and even look for patterns of fraud. Anyone who registered recently at a public event should definitely check online to make sure you are actually registered. We could crowd-source an investigation here. Anyone with the tech skills to set this up? People would need to report when and where they registered if there is not the info they expected to find.
