2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe easy way to identify a Sanders state: Snow, Mountains, and Wilderness
And the more of all three, the better he does.
Here are his best states in order with their characteristics
86% Vermont (Snow, Mountain, Wilderness)
81% Alaska (Snow, Mountain, Wilderness)
79% Utah (Snow, Mountain, Wilderness)
78% Idaho (Snow, Mountain, Wilderness)
72% Washington (Snow, Mountain)
69% Hawaii (Mountain, Wilderness)
67% Kansas (Wilderness)
64% Maine (Snow, Mountain)
61% Minnesota (Snow, Wilderness)
60% NH (Snow, Mountain)
59% Colorado (Snow, Mountain)
57% Nebraska (Wilderness)
52% Oklahoma (Wilderness)
50% Michigan (Snow)
So if you want to find a Sanders state, look for a frozen place where very few people live. If it's got a mountain too, it's a lock. He's nowhere to be found in places that a lot of people live and where the weather is warm.

It's great to see POC who support Sanders standing up and trying to shut down the narrative that we Sanders supporters are all a bunch of young white men. It's a meme that is really demeaning to the thousands of us who aren't.

(8,738 posts)So you are saying states like mine, Washington, are a cold, rural, mountainous state? Rural meaning small and simple and mostly white.
The obvious point of my post was that this it not the case. Especially in the case of Washington but in almost all the states you mentioned. Conversely, at least one of the descriptions you used could be applied to states like Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and so on.

I've been to NE and it's all fields, and cows, and cornfields. Look at Vermont on google earth its gorgeous and more full of trees than people. Lovely. Look at Alaska, pure wilderness, Kansas, and probably everything else on OP's list, broad open spaces, or places with wilderness. He does well in rural areas.

(651 posts)Cause when I think of someone whose policies have benefited the poor and working people, I think of Hillary Clinton. That is why she supports the trade model she does, and that is why Wall Street and corporations have given her massive amounts of money, continue to raise money on her behalf, and that is why she continues to have fundraising get togethers with corporate and financial lobbyists. Those groups giving her money expect nothing in return, they just want to make the country a better place, LOL!
Yes, the person arguing that universal health care is a pipe dream fights for those suffering economically. Cause the cost of health care has not outpaced wage growth, even with the ACA. A person backing that trade model too, and "school choice", and austerity, can talk about caring about the poor more than the democratic socialist she's running against. That is why she and her husband gutted social programs that benefited the poor and bragged about it, that is why they deregulated financial capital (which has since decimated the poor, especially people of color, doubly since the 2008 crash) and said that anyone criticizing them at the time were in favor of outdated policies and needed to enter into the 21st century. That is why they fought hard to create the WTO, cause they care oh so much about the poor, working people.
It's kind of funny to read comments from people like yourself, cause the Wall Street and corporate elites she is meeting with, give her and her family all that money, they don't take her populist talk seriously. Neither should anyone else on the left.

(651 posts)I feel bad for the people on this site that have had to endure your posts for however long you have been here. It seems that Clinton supporters don't have a full appreciation for how much the country has changed, especially people in their party. The days where you could mock the left and have no consequences are over. I hope you realize, given that your candidate is the likely nominee, that you do in fact need the people you are alienating with your behavior. You need a large percentage of Sanders supporters to support Clinton, or she's toast. She is already, in many ways, on thin ice. We'll see where the investigations take us. Her poll numbers are already a disaster, if she were running against anyone but Trump she'd been in deep trouble. Given that she is the likely nominee, you do have a responsibility to your candidate to put some thought into how you communicate with people. Alienating most everyone that isn't in the tribe is a sure fire way of harming her chances.
You also don't seem to appreciate how much independents and the general public has changed. There has been a sharp turn to the left in the last decade or so, and that is in large part because of the impact of the policies your candidate and those to her right have supported. You're out of your mind if you think you can win this election, and especially elections in the future, by always appealing to "moderates". Our system is corrupt, inequitable and leading us to ecological collapse. Moderates, by their nature, don't want to fundamentally change the system. You and your candidate keep going with that mindset and Bernie Sanders will be peanuts to what you'll face in a decade if the system isn't radically changed.

The state is about 800 miles from east to west and 800 miles from north to south.
It's not red state versus blue state, it's urban versus rural.
Texas has urban liberal areas and rural conservative areas.
Garrett78
(10,721 posts)Washington is an exception, but exceptions are what prove the rule. Clinton does better in large urban areas. Large urban areas translate to more people. Simple as that.
One can expect Clinton to do better in NY, PA, MD, CA, NJ and the like. One can expect Sanders to do better in MT, SD, ND, WY and the like.
This is why I feel fairly confident that Clinton will end up with about 2200 pledged delegates (give or take 100) and Sanders will end up with about 1800 pledged delegates (give or take 100).

(10,721 posts)...first you claim that Clinton's success is correlated with how red a state is. Then, when it's pointed out to you that that isn't true, you decide the falsity of your initial claim "just proves how strong of a candidate" Sanders is.
Mmmkay.

(1,432 posts)I don't agree with that statement, but if that's the reality you live in, then it''s fine by me because it would show the strength of Bernie's candidacy. Sorry if I confused you. I hate when I confuse Hillary supporters. I feel horrible inside.
So you tell me. Who's doing better in the red states. Bernie or Hillary? My reality says Hillary. She pretty much took the entire south. If Bernie is "crushing it in red state", like your reality claims, then why didn't he do better in the south?

(10,721 posts)So, let's look again at Romney's margin of victory in each of the 24 states he carried in 2012, the most recent presidential election:
1) Utah: 48 points
2) Wyoming: 41 points
3) Oklahoma: 34 points
4) Idaho: 32 points
5) West Virginia: 27 points
6) Arkansas: 24 points
7) Nebraska: 23 points
8) Kentucky: 22 points (22.7)
9) Alabama: 22 points (22.3)
10) Kansas: 22 points (22.2)
11) Tennessee: 20 points (20.5)
12) North Dakota: 20 points (19.8)
13) South Dakota: 18 points
14) Louisiana: 17 points
15) Texas: 16 points
16) Alaska: 14 points (14.0)
17) Montana: 14 points (13.5)
18) Mississippi: 12 points
19) South Carolina: 11 points (10.6)
20) Indiana: 11 points (10.5)
21) Arizona: 10 points (10.1)
22) Missouri: 10 points (9.6)
23) Georgia: 8 points
24) North Carolina: 2 points
Those states are listed from 'reddest' to least 'red'. Which candidate, Sanders or Clinton, is having the most success in the 'reddest' of the 'red' states? Sanders by a long shot. Once he wins Wyoming, he will have claimed victory in each of the 4 'reddest' states in the US. Most of the Deep South states are in the bottom half of the list. Furthermore, Sanders is having more success within the 'red' areas of various states (i.e., the rural and suburban areas, as opposed to the urban areas where Clinton does best).
I don't know how much clearer it can be that the Clinton-red state meme promoters have taken reality and flipped it on its head.

How do you identify a Sanders state? Yes, because Hawaii is so frigging cold and Alaska has no diversity ....
You can also identify a Clinton state very easily: 1. If the people believe a fake accent. Particularly a fake southern accent. Which is why she won't debate Bernie from Brooklyn she can't seem to get the accent correctly. 2. If your state is Republican and in the south. 3. If your state suffers from election irregularities as in Nevada and Arizona. 4. If you tend to suffer from a case of historic amnesia
