2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWe are at one of those points in history when
life time commitments are made to one party or another. When FDR saved the working class and created the party that eventually brought about the changes in the 50's and 60's. When Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act and in doing so gave the Republicans their "Southern Strategy" which brought about the right wing shift that has led to this moment where we realize we are about to loss what we took for granted.
Now, all women, especially, and politically aware citizens are in a position to make their stand and do something about what matters most to them by aligning with the Democratic Party.
I hope and pray the leaders of our party are paying attention.

(4 posts)It seems the stakes are higher than ever. The fringe right have essentially taken over the Republican party and they want to drastically change our country for the worse, including the merger of church and state.

(198 posts)From my over 50 years of life has learned that the primary reason women are oppressed is other women. Women have never, and will never, act in unison on any issue. Although currently fool republican men are leading the charge to make women second class citizens, there has always been a good sized minority of women that would rather sabotage the aspirations of other women than realize that as a gender they could have equal rights and power as men in our republic.

I believe that the most important aspect of American citizenship, and perhaps the greatest gift we can offer a society attempting to emulate our greatness, is that involvement is required. Education, awareness, sociological benevolence are all requirements of a responsible citizen.
Nobody gets my rubber stamp.

(4,775 posts)which is why Dems need to actually be Dems, and represent the little people for real. No more of "we're a little better than the other party".
The way to consolidate public support is to support the public.
As it is, the Democratic Party is so morally bankrupt that it's hard to make a strong case for them to non-Democrats. It really is mostly a matter of "have you seen the other guys"? We give people too little to believe in, playing cynical political games where people's quality of life is triangulated away between the two corporate parties.
That's exactly why I was so incredibly disappointed with the administration Obama put together. It was a truly special moment in time. The people had risen up, to a degree I hadn't seen. That scene at the inaugural with the multitudes of truly good and hopeful people was incredible. Then those hopes were disregarded by the admin of Geithner, Summers, Emmanuel, Gates, Petraeus, HRC, not to mention by the President himself and his obsession with corporate centrism.
Obama isn't evil, and he certainly is a little better than the other guy, but goddamnit, that isn't the metric. We have almost nothing to rally the masses around because our people are owned by the same people their people are owned by.
So, I agree with you that we're at such a point, only I think we're totally blowing it.

(12,414 posts)yet I still want to see my country return to the days of national pride. Pride that any American can rise to the level of President. Pride that we are all rowing the same boat. Pride that we have defeated our enemies in an honorable manner. Pride that we have progressed in scientific, medical, agricultural, education, and humanitarian fields in each generation.
Putting aside my disappointments, I still feel this pride and it is because some Democrats are standing up for minorities, the underprivileged, children, and the rights of all. My hope is that the party recognizes the opportunity and responds as true civil servants.
