2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy son was sent TWO absentee ballots.
Here in California I am relatively confident if he completed and submitted both that it would be sorted out on the receiving end.
I am not, however, so confident that that would happen in a red state.
For instance in Florida, there is a huge surge in GOP absentee ballot voting: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpolitics/2012/10/florida-absentee-ballot-voting-could-exceed-500000-today-465k-as-of-this-morning.html
I fear we are looking at one of many ways that will facilitate the election falling off the back of a truck.

(40,232 posts)Probably the county auditor's office. They will probably want him to bring one back.

(44,974 posts)How many people did they send it to?
I know it's CA, but if every republican votes twice...
Yikes.

(46,585 posts)But even though we live in ultra-progressive SF, I will take the advice to contact the Elections office because they need to know. Orange County and San Diego here in CA are ultra-red and I want the Elections people to be aware of the mess they may be tee-ing up.

(57,936 posts)Apparently, the various counties communicate with each other. The state form is basically what is used in all the counties.
The mistake will most likely be caught. Of course, he should only vote once. That is all any of us are allowed.

(57,936 posts)Also the California Secretary of State's office.

(44,974 posts)They are supposed to be sorting all of that out because of identification envelope.

(738 posts)Why?
Incompetence is everywhere. Even California.
AtomicKitten
(46,585 posts)and didn't even consider incompetence. Excellent point.
Yikes.

(13,485 posts)but I believe incompetence has little to do with voting irregularities.

(57,936 posts)They make mistakes. So do people who fill out the forms -- the would-be voters. So do the people who assist in registering people. So do people on DU.
Mistakes, incompetence. We tend to think everyone has evil motives. They don't.
Voters have a responsibility to vote -- vote once and vote informed and vote honestly. The authorities cannot insure voters' honesty.

(13,485 posts)I think the point I was trying to make was that mistakes and incompetence aren't the problem I am concerned about; that happens to all of us and will continue. But the possibility of fraud is not something to be taken lightly, especially during this election. There is too much at stake this time around and the inroads to fraud are more prevalent and seemingly more ignored.
You said, "The authorities cannot insure voters' honesty" and of course this is the fact. But the authorities, the government, the judicial system, must assure that the processes is adhered to and that every citizen gets his rightful "equal" say. It is our most precious and our most precipitous right.

If he was sent more than one absentee ballot application request that is not a problem unless he receives more than one ballot AND votes more than twice. Sometimes organizations sent the application requests to targeted groups and it could involve multiple groups.
An absentee ballot application request is an application requesting a ballot to vote early by whatever method other than voting on election day.
If he receives more than one ballot with the names of the candidates for him to mark his choices then it should be reported.
