2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOne more Las Vegas convention thread, because the other dozen aren't enough.
Some people in other threads seem to think that nefarious things happened because Nevada flipped. As a Bernie supporter I had suspected nefarious but now think it was either stupidity or nefarious gone wrong. Bluntly, the Bernie campaign had a much better ground game.
For about a week before the convention I received multiple e-mails, texts, and phone calls to verify that I would be voting and did I have any questions.
A couple of days before the convention, the Clark County Democratic Party sent out this e-mail that caused a lot of the problem: http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511634764 . I and many others contacted the Bernie campaign and as a result we were sent info to ignore the message that we didn't need to show up on Saturday or that we could leave early. I have no idea what information the Hillary campaign sent to her supporters.
Everything ran hours behind, largely because of poor planning on the part of the county party - the first count was to be announced around 1:30, instead it was after 4:00. A lot of people left before the count was announced. There were Bernie people at the door asking supporters to not leave until the end of the convention and many people returned to the hall - which was a good thing because after the results were announced a Hillary supporter made a motion for a recount and the motion was voted down. Yes, that's right, if everyone had left - like we were told we could - the motion would have passed and the remaining delegates would have been polled. If the Bernie people hadn't cajoled and asked and begged their delegates to stay it would have been a much different result.
By that point we were all dug in and resolved to stay until the bitter end. There was a first realignment of delegates, which resulted in three Hillary supporters changing to Bernie. A second realignment resulted in no changes. More counting, the campaigns chose their delegates to the state convention, eventually we voted to accept them and it all ended at 9pm...some people had been there since before 8am.
Why did Clark County flip? Maybe some of the Hillary delegates didn't come on Saturday; there are people who attended caucuses on the Strip that said there was no enthusiasm about being a delegate at the county level. Given that it would mean giving up an entire Saturday - and remember these were people who were working on the Saturday of the original caucuses, so many may not have been able to get off work easily.
Maybe some delegates changed their minds between the district and county caucuses - we were not bound to our original votes and people may have simply switched.
Maybe some Hillary delegates believed the e-mail from the County Democratic Party, registered on Friday night, then stayed away on Saturday.
Simply put, this is what happens when you caucus. I hate caucuses, but the Nevada Democratic Party insist that's what they want so this reversal is all on them.

If you don't get vacation time at work, or have child or elder care issues, or one of many other reasons there may be to find it a hardship to commit the time involved, I can see why people may drop out. It's just another way of suppressing the voices of our poorer citizens, and it's not right.

It's a terrible process and should be ended, but the people who are implying that there was something nefarious about the flip are blaming the wrong people - this is all on Harry Reid and the Nevada Democratic Party.

(2,550 posts)We go through this almost every 4 years.
You'd think we'd be smart enough to get a real working process one day.

Nobody should have to go through this to vote. Ever. Caucus' suck.

Did I mention that I really hate caucuses?
