2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAll this brouhaha about caucuses makes no sense.
I dislike them, and would like to see open primaries
in all states with the proviso that you can only vote
for one party.
That said, the facts - at least in my state - are that
it comes down to money. Primaries have to be paid
by the state, caucuses by the parties.
We used to have primaries, the state budget was
tight, legislature killed primaries.
Actually now it seems that the Dems would like to return to the
primary system, but I doubt that the repugs will
support it. Without their support the caucuses will stay.
Just wanted to clear this up.

(3,431 posts)goes on about the caucus system without
the realization that legislatures are involved
in this; I also think that that particular system
serves the repugs more than the Dems.

(12,081 posts)delegates from both the caucus and the primary. Only the WA Democratic Party has chosen to only get delegates from the caucus. WA has a great mail in ballot primary. I believe the Democratic Party chose the caucus in order to depress voter turn out.

(3,431 posts)Why would the dems want to suppress voter
turn out though?

(12,081 posts)to keep some voters away. My father didn't get to vote because he is a Christian and had a commitment at his church. Our caucus was on Easter weekend(I also don't think that was a coincidence either). He missed the opportunity to fill out a surrogate affidavit that would have allowed him to vote early.

(23,156 posts)people here get extremely worked up over the caucus system, as if it's brand new every time.
I believe that in some states it's the local party that determines which it will be, but the money and the state legislatures are also involved. In any case, everyone who wants their state's system changed needs to spend the next few years working on that.
But I expect Iowa will still be doing caucuses five thousand years from now, so I wouldn't hold my breath if I were in that state.
