2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWho cares if Bernie is a "Democrat" or not? Most liberal and progressive voters don't give a shit!
Especially when we have Democrat politicians acting as agents for their conservative Wall Street and corporate benefactors.
Does the name Hillary Clinton ring a bell?
Bernie's status as an Independent in Vermont sure hasn't bothered progressive and liberal voters in Vermont or in the primaries this year.
Most people don't want a Wall Street/Corporate establishment candidate elected President just because they label themselves a "Democrat".

(2,546 posts)Easily argued that Bernie's opponent fits that description just as does Debbie and a host of others. The list is long and it is deep! Is Podesta a DEMOCRAT? What about the former first female Secretary of State that decried that women who don't support Hillary have a special place in hell waiting for them. She herself is a member of the Carlyle Group with Rumsfeld, Bush et al.
Bernie is 10 times the Democrat as all of these shills put together! A party registration does not make ypu one thing or another it is your record and your policies and how you have lived your life personally and politically.

(45,851 posts)Charlie Crist comes to mind.
And to a big extent it's the same people who thought supporting Crist was a great idea who are now residing in camp Weathervane.
The more things change the more they stay the same, the spin around here has been epic for going on a decade now.

(20,317 posts)They don't seem to understand that this entire campaign season is characterized by public disgust with the political establishment. Their response is basically, 'he's not a part of our club!', like people will consider that a mark against him.

(3,017 posts)Bernie has either been by himself or with one other person in maintaining independence from our 2 corrupt major parties during his 25 years in the House and Senate. It takes great political courage to maintain your values and refuse to go along.
This "party loyalty" nonsense belongs in the old Soviet Union, not in the United States.

(2,054 posts)All of the polls indicate that so far. And that trend may even deepen as more voters get to know Bernie.
I take it you're not opposed to Bernie's positions on most issues. Is that correct.

(4,835 posts)And she has stood up to the attacks well. There's no reason to expect that once the republican attack dogs have directed their attention on Bernie that he will stand up any better than she has.
The reason it makes a difference as to what party Bernie belongs to is the down ticket races. Every bad thing that Bernie has said about democrats in his life will be used against the democrats in the general election.
None of Bernie's agenda will be forwarded with a congress controlled by republicans. A Sander's administration is lose/lose for the Sander's agenda because he's not a democrat.

(4,835 posts)The current republican senate majority came about from the 2010 tea party movement.
There are quite a few blue states with republican senators up for reelection and those republican senators have their record of obstruction and attempting to repeal obamacare for 6 years as their legislative record.
Again, when the democrats get behind a good solid democrat who can stand up to the republican's multitude of manufactured scandals (as Hillary did in the most recent Benghazi hearing) the democrats will appear strong which will help the democrats down ticket.
If the democrats run an independent, it looks like there's something wrong with democrats. It is unlikely to help the democrats take the senate. Especially after the full force of republican 'swift boating' is brought to bear on Bernie's history.
It'll be ugly, it's best to stand with someone who can address their bullshit for hours on end, and come out looking strong.

(2,450 posts)A lot of people feel more comfortable when they "belong" or are a part of a team. These appeals work for a segment of the population, which is natural. It's an identity thing that works a lot like peer pressure. But, by nature, independents (the majority) are, well, independent.
The oppositions are just trying to "otherize" us and Bernie but failing because being an outsider works in his favor. For some reason they are trying to drive a wedge between "in" group and "out" group voters. It's juvenile, sophomoric, immature and gross. This election is about human lives, not some members-only club to make us feel special. Food in the bellies of hungry families should take precedence. Besides, as if being a democrat automatically makes you safe? Come on.
It's classic divide and conquer - and it will fail.

(11,546 posts)We don't care about labels. We care about policies and principles. I actually wish that an independent could run a successful campaign in this country but until more people get away from the two party system, that's not possible... yet.
So until then, we have to deal with caucuses and SDs and other limitations.

(50,299 posts)A little while ago my husband walked in and said, with a totally straight face, "I think Hillary has endorsed Bernie." I did a double take and a "WTF are you talking about" and then he says: It was on the television just now. A scroll at the bottom of the screen that said "Hillary Clinton says we must elect a Democrat."
