A Betrayal of Workers: In NY, Hillary Is Falsely Taking Credit for Fight For $15

Hillary Clinton is taking credit for the Fight for $15. Here’s why this is a betrayal of workers.
Mark Provost | April 4, 2016

Hillary Clinton will be joining New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday for a rally in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center at 11 a.m. to celebrate the historic $15/hour minimum wage legislation. Speaking as someone who worked for the Fight for $15 from the very first action in NYC, let me explain why this is an appalling betrayal of workers.

Fast-food workers marched in the streets and shut down stores for years, while an army of online supporters shared viral photos, memes, and news. And we did it again and again. Despite all odds and haters telling us that a $15 minimum wage would never happen — and still telling us that we should be “realistic” — we started winning and never looked back.

Fight for $15 is arguably the greatest union victory in decades, perhaps even the greatest victory of the progressive movement in recent history.

One of those victories came eight months ago, when the Democratic Party adopted a $15/hour minimum wage in the official party platform, weeks after Bernie Sanders introduced legislation in Congress.

15. At the Las Vegas townhall she said...

Typical Clinton lie to get votes...

Here she says she supports 'Cuomo who wants to raise it to $15' - not $15/hour for everybody.

Then Clinton states "But I'm standing with the majority of Democrats in the Senate who have introduced a minimum wage increase to $12. "

QUESTION: One more question, will you support a living wage of $15 an hour, which is an issue that is very — that is at the forefront for working families?

CLINTON: Absolutely. You know, I support a federal minimum wage and I support states going higher than the federal minimum wage. That's why I support Andrew Cuomo in New York who wants to raise it to 15. I supported what they did in L.A. And I supported what they did in Seattle.

But I'm standing with the majority of Democrats in the Senate who have introduced a minimum wage increase to $12. That would put it at the highest it has been since 1968. That would mean a wage increase for 35 million American workers, and one in four low-wage workers who are now just barely getting by.

And it would help so many women because the majority of minimum wage workers are women. So I'm absolutely in favor of it. I will do everything that I can. We'll set it because it's a floor. And then I will use the bully pulpit to convince states that believe they can go further to do just that.

is that laborers do not want a nationally fractured, balkanized minimum wage, with some areas giving and some areas taking away. $15 an hour, for labor, everywhere, with no excuses or backpedaling or asterisks. Work is work, and work deserves fair pay. There are not that many difference in cost of living, things like gas, education, medical care, child care, food and even rents, are going up everywhere. To say that it is less expensive to live in one place is a lie, used to dampen wage growth. As soon as someone starts muttering into their sleeve about the "cost of living" they are going to follow up with an excuse as to why they can't pay a fair wage for labor.
