2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA couple of POSITIVE ARTICLES about Bernie for those complaining...
Some Clinton supporters are complaining the Bernie supporters are just posting negative posts about Clinton, but nothing positive about Bernie.....Well despite the fact that both sides are doing it, it's kind of valid criticism.
So in the spirit of positive discussion, here's a couple of positive articles of substance about Bernie.
I'm curious how quickly this will sink like a stone dur to lack of interest.

Bernie Sanders made Land Trust Possible
Prospects seemed bleak. The familys savings had dwindled after his unemployment insurance gave out. But in 1993 Robbins saw a newspaper advertisement for something called the Burlington Community Land Trust. He visited its offices and learned about its generous grants for low-income home ownership. The innovative offer would significantly lower the price by allowing the couple to purchase only the house, while the trust paid for the land it sat on. Within two years, his family owned a home in a small town just to the east of the city. The Robbins family bought its home through a conventional realtor and a commercial bank while also entering a covenant with the land trust to lease the land their home sits upon. This reduced the costs of their mortgage and down payment substantially.
Theyre far from alone. Across the land trusts portfolio today, there are about 565 other homes that enjoy similar terms, not to mention 2,100 rental and cooperative units. Half of these holdings are located within the city of Burlington itself, which had a total of 16,897 housing units as of 2010, meaning that about 7.6 percent of the stock sits on the nonprofits land.
We dont understand why housing isnt done this way everywhere, says Robbins, who says the cheaper mortgage allowed his family to save money for college and retirement that otherwise would have gone toward housing. Its just such a logical thing to have land owned by a community and the house be your private property to do with as you wish. Weve just had a terrific life here so far because of it.
The land trust Sanders made possible is now the largest and most influential of its type in the nation.
The man largely responsible for this good fortune? Bernie Sanders......MORE
Ive talked with people across the country and they would die to have the kind of political support weve had over the years, says Robbins, who went on to serve on the land trusts board from 1997 to 2006. We are where we are because we have that political commitment, we arent just a lonely nonprofit but a real partnership with government. Were delighted to have Bernie still out there. I hope he goes all the way.
How does Bernie do it?
2012 Senate campaign
http://www.thenation.com/article/how-does-bernie-sanders-do-it/
But up in Vermont, one of the most refreshingly unconventional politicians in America was coasting toward re-election with a campaign that broke all the rules. A week before the election, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders had run no attack ads. In fact, he hadnt run any TV commercials. He was still speaking in full sentences, not soundbites; still inviting voters to ask complicated questions on controversial issuesand still answering with big, bold proposals to address climate change, really reform healthcare with a single-payer Medicare for All program, steer money away from the Pentagon and toward domestic jobs initiatives, and counter the threat of plutocracy posed by Citizens United by amending the Constitution. Rejecting the empty partisanship of the pre-election frenzy, Sanders was ripping the austerity agenda of Romney and Paul Ryan, while warning that Obama and too many Democrats were inclining toward an austerity-lite grand bargain that would make debt reduction a greater priority than saving Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
And Sanders was winningbig. A poll conducted by the Democratic Party of Vermont had the independent senator with a 6921 lead over his rival, Republican John MacGovern, a businessman and four-term Massachusetts state legislator who promised to replace the only admitted socialist in the US Senate. Sanders was ahead among women and men, across income and education categories, and in every region. I go crazy with all these Democrats saying you have to go conservative to win, you have to go cautious to win. These damned consultants come in and say, This is how you have to run, and its always the same: raise money, spend it on television, dont say anything that will offend anyone. And the Democrats do it and then they end up in tight races, worried about whether theyll make it, says Sanders, who caucuses with Democrats but rarely takes advice from anyone in Washington. For the life of me, I cant figure out why progressives listen to consultants. Building movements, making progress on progressive issues you have to talk to people, educate people, organize people.

(1,017 posts)It was worth a try but unfortunately everyone loves a car wreck . Plenty of time for positive messaging after the nomination , till then it would appear that chaos rules .

(12,327 posts)The article about the land grants was very informative. It's been such a success in Burlington; it would be nice if they could get this program going in other areas.
I couldn't access all of the second article. The Nation kept booting me off for some reason.
