Bernie Sanders: Shut down Indian Point

ALBANY - Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders on Monday called for the closure of Indian Point Energy Center in Westchester County, saying he's convinced the major nuclear power plant is a "catastrophe waiting to happen."
Entergy Corp., Indian Point's owner, is awaiting a decision on its bid for a new federal license, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo among those calling for its closure.
Sanders, a senator from Vermont, added his voice to the opposition Monday, issuing a statement saying the plant must be closed in a "safe and responsible way." The plant, located in Buchanan, supplies a significant portion of the New York City area's energy, but critics say the risk of a nuclear accident in such a densely populated area is too great.
"In my view, we cannot sit idly by and hope that the unthinkable will never happen," Sanders said.
Sanders' statement comes about two weeks before the New York presidential primary, which is set for April 19...
