http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/California-primary-up-for-grabs-as-Clinton-s-7235299.phpClinton leads Sanders 47 percent to 41 percent among likely voters in the June 7 primary, with 12 percent undecided. Voters who do not state a party preference are allowed to vote in the Democratic primary, which is good news for Sanders, as unaffiliated voters in other states have been supportive. In California, nonpartisans support Sanders 49 percent to 39 percent for Clinton.
The survey was brimming with red flags for Clinton, who has lost six of the last seven Democratic primary and caucus contests and has raised less money than Sanders the past three months. While Clinton has a large lead in the number of delegates needed to secure the Democratic nomination, Sanders has enough money to continue running a robust campaign through the California primary.
Not only has Clintons lead shrunk dramatically among voters, her personal image is viewed unfavorably by a majority of all voters in deep-blue California. According to Field, 47 percent of registered California voters view Clinton positively, 48 percent negatively. Among those who do not state a party preference, 50 percent view her negatively.

(24,010 posts)...(or as Democratic, of course), in order to vote for Bernie Sanders in the June 7 primary.
("No Party Preference" used to be known as "Decline to state."
Those registered as "Independent" CANNOT vote in the Democratic primary"! They must re-register, as per above, by May 23.
Remember: "No Party Preference." NOT "Independent."
PLEASE INCLUDE THIS IN ALL POSTS ABOUT VOTING IN CALIFORNIA!

(10,143 posts)I've been listed as No Party Preference for at least the last 6 years, which is functionally the same thing. There is an option to be an "American Independent", but that's an actual recognized political party in California.
Unfortunately, I can't find a copy of the CA online registration form that actually lets me look at the current form says about parties without first filling in a few pages of data.

PLEASE DON'T USE THE WORD "INDEPENDENTS" LOOSELY LIKE THIS!
People registered as "Independents" CANNOT vote in the Dem primary! They must re-register as "No Party Preference" or as Democrats, by May 23.
Please include this info in all discussions of Indies voting for Sanders in California.

(8,541 posts)As long as you didn't vote for another party in the general.
If I'm wrong I apologize.

(24,010 posts)I'll see if I can find out. My info comes off a county registrar web site. I looked at it carefully for this reason. I'm pretty sure it said those registered Independent cannot vote in the Dem primary.
If nothing else, TO BE SURE, Indies should re-register as "No Party Preference" or Democrat.

(8,541 posts)I'm just glad there is still time to register in California.

(10,143 posts)The Democratic presidential primary this year is open to people registered as Democrats or Non-Partisan (aka Declined to State): Republicans, Greens, Libertarians, etc are excluded. (And to confuse things further, the American Independent Party's presidential primary is also open to Non-Partisans, but they have nothing to do with Sanders or Clinton). The Republican presidential primary is limited to registered Republicans.
The rest of the primaries being held the same day - Senate, House, etc - are all open primaries.
