(16,189 posts)And embarrassing that it bugs them so much that Bernie was invited.
Embarrassing that they don't understand why a Vatican that has expressed repeated concern that a poverty-producing global economic order was stripping human beings of their dignity might find alignment with a man who has made that one of the central issues of his campaign and his entire career.
It must be terrible to have to ignore the truth so much. To have to be opposed to people who are interested in economic and social justice. It must be sad.

YOu can't invite yourself. This is asinine and you all lack any critical independent thought.

(3,335 posts)Vatican, which translates to "the Pope", when in fact he had received an invitation from the local guy in NY who had not even run it by the head of the Academy who is sponsoring the conference. Bernie either didn't know to what he was being invited and who was inviting him, or he was being dishonest. Either way, it doesn't reflect well on the man who claims to be the gatekeeper of all that is pure and honest. Now he has put the Vatican in a poor posture, because he has injected politics into the situation.
"...But the office of the pope moved quickly to distance the pontiff from the visit. Father Federico Lombardi, the Popes spokesman, said Sanders had been invited not by the pope but by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. Lombardi told the Italian news agency Ansa: For the moment there is no expectation that there will also be a meeting with the pope. ...
Now if Bernie was so interested in the Conference and not in scoring political points, I would suggest that he attend the 4-day conference (for all four days) which runs directly in the days preceeding the NY primary, knowing that he will not be meeting with the pope, and that he will be missing out on perhaps the debate and all those rally's he has scheduled prior to the NY Primary. If he then chooses to pass on the trip to the conference, we'll know what his intentions were.

(3,335 posts)If you play your condescending attitude with me, expect that I will reciprocate. As I said, I saw Bernie's interview this morning and he made if perfectly clear that he had received an invitation from the Vatican based on the ideas he was espousing as part of his presidential campaign. The Vatican's response says otherwise. It appears the armor of honesty and trustworthiness is starting to chip off of Mr. Sanders.

(8,732 posts)I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event. He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.
A Bloomberg report quoted Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that Sanders had broken with protocol by failing to contact her office first.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.

(154,021 posts)More like Minitrue... and when I write for the paper I walk a line round the center.
By the way, I am actually working on a story on the Panama Papers... and how they are related to why my neighbors cannot afford basic shit like oh housing. Yes, the Obama, Bush and Clinton Administrations have made this easier though TPAs, and there is real outrage. Not that CNN will bother telling you this. I also do not expect most of our politicians to give a rats ass about that. But the pitchforks are going to come.
There is more, this idiocy is to remove a discussion of this from your screens.
For the record, stories of this are spanning the political media from oh NewsMax (I came across the link two seconds ago) to CNN... sorry cupcake. And to quote Bill, the only thing he had right on that, was... "tell the truth."
I would prefer BOTH to spend a lot more quality time on POLICY, like poverty, income inequality and state corruption.
HillareeeHillaraah
(685 posts)On just the Vatican story, putting on your impartial Journalist hat, the story unfolds publically something like this:
Bernie spox on Morning Java crows about the invite. Political back and forth ensues.
The woman who is running the conference, who is based in Rome responds with no that's not how it went down, first, he asked to be invited, and second, for him to not contact her first was a slight and not protocol.
Then, a Monsignor who's in NY and is her superior says no no, I invited him, and she knew all about it. What she forgot?
And now she's no longer speaking about it.
This passes the smell test? The Vatican inserts itself in an American election? Really....
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)nice...
I think the list of people invited and the reasoning behind it is closer to the truth.
We wanted a person from North America. They could have invited PM Trudeau... I suspect none wants to give any air time to President Pena Nieto (plus he is a neoliberal) the full list they released had not a one of them. And Lopez Obrador is an embarrassment at this point. You might want to look at the list.
So yes I am taking the Vatican's POV here. I also do not expect this to play that much of a role with American Catholics who are next to vote, The part of the story you missed. Though in the optics department, he being in the Vatican discussing income inequality will be a hell of a contrast with HRC at a nice swank fundraiser.
And anyway, how many posts from the ACTUAL VATICAN INVITATION need to be posted for the OP to finally remove the false narrative...
For the record, I don't expect her to, and I know Bloomberg News did an oopsie. They happen.
HillareeeHillaraah
(685 posts)Of all the leaders and thinkers in North America, they picked a guy in the middle of a contentious primary race.
To believe that is to believe that the Vatican was clueless as to the perception of the invitation as a gesture of an endorsement. Or one has to believe that the Vatican all of the sudden is getting involved in Amercian Elections. One cannot broadly discount either of those two scenarios.
And I cannot simply toss away the initial reaction from the very woman who is running the gathering. She was clear and adamant. And now she's not speaking.
I think you are choosing to believe the narrative that favors your candidate.
Which I imagine you reject, so agree to disagree.
Peace.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)who happens to be an American... so there is that. Oh and by the way that economist is talking at the conference.
What I got to wonder is what level of coordination exists between the actual campaign and posters here. The talking points are amazingly the same.

(685 posts)Yeah, no , I'm a furniture maker from NY not paid by anyone other than my customers...
If the talking points read similarly maybe it's because these alleged talking points are obvious truths that anyone can come up with on their own.
Or you could believe that anyone who questions his campaign is coordinating somehow with hers.
Not the case here.
But let me ask you this, getting away from the smell test of it all: why is he going to sit and listen to this event, half way round the world in the middle of the New York primary? He's not speaking, just listening....he's not, so far, having an audience with the Pope. What's the point except for it to appear statesman-like? The timing of it seems ill-advised - its an exhausting journey and he already looks tired; it will cost the campaign a bundle (does the campaign pay for the trip or is this his own out of pocket? That's just a curiosity, doesn't matter to me either way.)
And why did he go on the View and say yes, he's meeting with the Pope? It's too easy to disprove, what could possibly have been his motive to mislead, other than something political.
Primaries are political and he just seems clunky lately -

She's the one who didn't seem amused by the invitation. No one was any the wiser until she made her opinion known to Bloomberg.

How much better that Bernie Sanders wants to discuss these kinds of issues rather than speaking to a room of Wall Street elite for a humongous fee.
Good for you Senator Sanders.
