2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe facts surrounding Bernie's invitation to Vatican City
The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences extended an invitation to Bernie Sanders to participate in their conference which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Centesimus Annus.
Many world leaders, researchers and scientists were invited to participate. The first step in getting securing this invitation, is to apply. Not everyone who applies is invited. It is evident that the attendee list includes many prominent, accomplished participants from across the globe.
Bernie was extended an invitation to this conference. This is an exciting honor. His supporters should be proud of him, despite some negative grumblings.
Negative publicity ensued after Margaret Archer of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, issued disparaging comments, accusing Bernie of being "discourteous". She even speculated, that, I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote but this is not the Catholic vote and he should remember that and act accordingly -- not that he will.
Here are the facts. The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as a whole, extended this invitation to Bernie. They didn't have to. They granted this honor to Bernie because they want him there. If the organization wholly shared Ms. Archer's views, the invitation would have never happened. To suggest that Bernie wasn't invited--is unfair, unfounded and untrue.
Furthermore, below is the text of a press release/press statement released by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. You will notice that Bernie's name is listed FIRST in the list of attendees. Obviously, the organization is very proud that Bernie is attending. Their press materials--which are disseminated via the wires, worldwide--touts Bernie's name prominently.
I've written hundreds of press releases, on behalf of scientists, corporations and organizations. Press materials are designed to inform and publicize information. The most important information is placed in the first paragraph. Frankly, most reporters don't read past the headline and the first paragraph. Bernie's name is listed in that first paragraph, and is prominently featured as the first name.
That is not a mistake. That was done to spotlight Bernie Sander's involvement.
Clearly, Bernie has earned the support and respect of Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences--enough to get this coveted invitation and enough for them to highly tout his participation.
Undoubtedly, there are many important people and voices within this organization. Margaret Archer is the president and she is one of those voices. However, her concerns and allegations were not important enough to override the decision that this organization made to invite Bernie and to showcase his involvement.
We should all be very proud of Bernie Sanders and we should all look forward to the contributions that he will make at this important conference.
Bernie Sanders supporters should be celebrating this invitation--and so should Bernie Sanders.
(Link and) Text of press release issued by the pontifical Academy of Social Sciences
-------------------------------------------------
We're delighted to host this conference to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Centesimus Annus, bringing together world leaders, including US Senator Sanders, Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, Bolivian President Evo Morales, Academicians of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences such as its President Margaret Archer, and leading scholars such as Professor Daniel Finn, Professor Jeffrey Sachs etc., to examine and discuss changes in politics, economics, and culture in the world these last 25 years in the light of Pope Francis' new encyclical Laudato si'. Our intention is socio-political in the highest sense of the term, because according to art. 1 of our Statutes, the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences was established by the Holy Father John Paul II on 1 January 1994 with the aim of promoting the study and progress of the social sciences, primarily economics, sociology, law and political science.
Title I - Constitution and Aims of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences
Art. 1
The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences was established by the Holy Father John Paul II on 1 January 1994 (AAS 86 [1994], 213), with the aim of promoting the study and progress of the social sciences, primarily economics, sociology, law and political science. The Academy, through an appropriate dialogue, thus offers the Church the elements which she can use in the development of her social doctrine, and reflects on the application of that doctrine in contemporary society. The Academy, which is autonomous, maintains a close relationship with the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

(70,273 posts).....the Sanders later drops the 'pope' when he speaks about this.
So, Sanders name drops the pope-the Vatican calls him on his big fish story--and then Sanders drops the word -pope-the next time he speaks. got it!
You forget what happened when Sanders talked to the press today.

.............Respect for Pope
Sanders earlier on Friday said, this is an invitation from the Vatican, from a pope that I have enormous respect for in term of the level of consciousness that hes raising on the need to have morality in our economy."
The office of the pope moved quickly to distance the pontiff from Sanderss visit. Father Federico Lombardi, the Popes spokesman, said Sanders had been invited not by the pope but by the pontifical academy of social sciences. Lombardi told the Italian news agency Ansa: For the moment there is no expectation that there will also be a meeting with the pope.

Sanders told reporters in New York on Friday that he is very excited about this invitation from the Vatican to participate in a major conference dealing with how we can inject morality into todays economy..................

(24,411 posts)There is a very direct connection to the Pope, as the conference, "offers the Church elements useful to the development of its social doctrine, and it reflects on the application of that doctrine in contemporary society."
What is said, discussed and offered at this conference, could be used to shape the Pope's "social doctrine."
Furthermore, the press release issued by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences (the one that prominently features Bernie's name) is issued via the Vatican. All PASS websites, press materials and correspondence are .va
This means that these organizations are a direct part of the Vatican.

(24,411 posts)The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences is a part of the Vatican. Yes, we all are aware that it was PASS that invited Bernie. However, this is the Pope's "think tank" if you will. It's a part of the Vatican.
Yes, everyone clearly understands that the Pope didn't call up Bernie personally and invite him. It's the Pope's organization that did.
We're on the same page.
The press release issued about Bernie and others being invited to this conference--was issued by a .va address. That's the Vatican. So, it is accurate to say that Bernie has been invited by the Vatican to Vatican City on behalf of the Pope and his think tank, PASS. Yes, not a personal invitation, but obviously--there is a clear connection there.
And listen. I have gone round and round with all of you Hillary supporters who argued vociferously that this Margaret Archer and her rancid argument against Bernie was gospel. She was the authority on which all of you based your attacks on Bernie.
Her words and her assertions were kicked to the moon by an aid to the Pope, who is her superior. He said that Archer's assertions, "We're not true and she knows it." He basically called her a willful liar!
You all seems to be looking for your dark, little moments to destroy Bernie. We get it. You're on the rampage. We were warned about the Clinton camp's new strategy when it comes to Bernie, "Disqualify, Defeat and Unify".
We get what you're doing. I'd just like to say that there is much to be positive about here. Bernie was invited to speak at this amazing conference at Vatican City. It's a great opportunity. You guys can continue to try to transform a very proud moment into a bullying moment.
It's what the Clinton campaign is. It's what they do. And many of you are happy to carry that banner for her.
But maybe--just maybe--since the first round of Margaret Archer lies have been thoroughly debunked by the Vatican--you could just, for once--give it a rest and realize that you lost this round?
Seriously, don't you ever get tired of shoveling shit for the Clinton campaign?

(1,217 posts)post. It is indeed an honor not only for the good Senator but also for his supporters. We finally have in the 'new' Pope a person with the courage of his own convictions, unafraid and undeterred by the powers that be (or rather were) of the Vatican and an American presidential candidate who share identical views of the human condition.
A Match Made in Heaven? Shared visions for the betterment of people all over the world? Peacemakers rather than warmongers? YES to all.

(24,411 posts)wonderful that Bernie was invited, and that his thoughts and ideas will be a part of the conversation at this important conference in Vatican City.
I have been very impressed with Pope Francis's commitment to serving the poor and lifting up those in need. He's also directly commented on the disparity between the rich and the poor.
I linked earlier to additional info about this conference. From Wikipedia, "Through appropriate dialogue it offers the Church elements useful to the development of its social doctrine, and it reflects on the application of that doctrine in contemporary society. PASS, which is autonomous, maintains a close relationship with the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace."
This is a high honor. The discussions and ideas put forth at this conference could be used to shape the Church's social doctrine.

it's a short article. the first two paragraphs:
U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.
"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.

From what I've read, PASS sounds like a "think tank", that is run by the Vatican and is used to shape and add to the Pope's social doctrine.
CNN reported that Bernie's release didn't mention any plans to meet with the Pope, "He [Bernie Sanders] did not say if he would be meeting with Pope Francis in his release."

(24,411 posts)So much of what we've heard that has been negative today--has been thoroughly debunked.
The woman who made those bizarre allegations about Bernie not being invited were thoroughly cast as untruthful by her superior in a Reuters article.
Maybe, people just need to accept what Bernie has said about this. He's clearly told the truth thus far, and an aid to the Pope has backed up everything Bernie has said.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.
An invitation to Sanders dated March 30, which was emailed to Reuters, was signed by Sorondo and also included Archer's name.
I think it's time to move onto another subject. Bernie will go to Vatican City, make incredible contributions--and we'll hear many more details later, I'm sure.

(24,411 posts)We have the president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Science who has made some rather odd comments about Bernie, "I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote but this is not the Catholic vote and he should remember that and act accordingly -- not that he will.
Who knows what she is all about. It's not important.
Reuters just issued this article, in which a "an aid close to the Pope" who is also "a chancellor at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences" wholly disputes what this Margaret Archer has said.
From Reuters:
"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.
He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.
A Bloomberg report quoted Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that Sanders had broken with protocol by failing to contact her office first.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.
An invitation to Sanders dated March 30, which was emailed to Reuters, was signed by Sorondo and also included Archer's name.

(10,476 posts)was all about "THE POPE INVITED BERNIE TO VISIT", when it was really;
*a conference of many people
*The Pope himself didn't invite him
*They may not have face-time at all at this conference
*Bernie may have been the one who initiated the "invitation", though this is at the moment disputed.
Being one of many conference attendees is not as big a deal as it was sold at first, I'm afraid.

(24,411 posts)was about Bernie being invited to Vatican City to participate in the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences conference.
We all understood that there are many others participating. I said that repeatedly. Bernie said that is his press release. The Vatican press release says that too. That press release is all over this board, and many have re-posted it and have been celebrating this high honor.
You Hillary supporters and your sour grapes today. I don't think I've ever seen you guys in such a goofy state.
Bernie clearly was invited. An aid to the Pope confirmed that. That is not in dispute. The aid to the Pope is a superior to the woman who made the charge that Bernie was not invited. She was basically called a liar.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.
An invitation to Sanders dated March 30, which was emailed to Reuters, was signed by Sorondo and also included Archer's name.

(24,411 posts)Bernie never said, "I have a meeting scheduled with the Pope."
Produce that quote. Please.
We'll all be waiting here for you.
Bernie didn't mention that he was meeting with the Pope in his press materials and press release that went out on this subject.
He announced on The View that he was going to Vatican City, to be a part of the Pope's Academy. The words Vatican/Pope/Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences are used interchangeably to discuss that he will be going to Vatican City.
NEVER did Bernie say that there would be a scheduled meeting.
Wow, you people!
And the thing is---when all of your bile is debunked and discredited--you won't care. You won't respond. You'll just move on to the next pile of bile and you'll wallow in that for a while.
I love supporting Bernie Sanders and all of the wonderful things he does. He's about being positive and proactive. And he's got a lot of great ideas. It must be really rough gallivanting all over the Internet all day, spreading disinformation and trying so hard to cut someone down. (24,411 posts)He never said that.
Bernie was discussing the invitation to Vatican City and his participation in the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences conference, in general.
One more time...it is honest to use all of these terms interchangeably: The Vatican/The Pope/Vatican City/The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.
Again, more hair splitting from the bile brigade. Sour grapes city because Hillary isn't going and this is a big deal for Bernie (and his campaign!).

(1,065 posts)QUESTION: "You're meeting with the Pope??"
BERNIE: "Yup."
There's no nuance to massage here.
He didn't say, "Well, I'm going to the Vatican."
He didn't say, "I hope to."
He was asked a simple and direct question and his answer was knowingly false.
And, you people can sit there and watch that, and then pretend it didn't happen.
Unreal.

Bernie never said that he had a scheduled meeting, which is what you have said. So, I'd be real careful about beating this dead horse about Bernie making allegations--when you're the one who said, "Bernie said he had a scheduled meeting with the Pope". Bernie never said that.
If I was invited to this prestigious conference, and someone said, "OMG, You're meeting with the Pope!" I'd probably reply, "Yup" too! These terms can be used interchangeably.
He's also said that he's going to The Vatican. Maybe the conference is in Vatican City, but not at the Vatican. Ohhhhh....better bounce on that one too!!

He was speaking in general terms.
Bernie released a press release, that gave great detail about this conference. He never once said that he was meeting with the Pope. In fact, CNN reported that Bernie wasn't meeting with the Pope, after the Sanders campaign interviewed him.
People can use these terms interchangeably. But again, you'd rather dig in and make some ridiculous point for some super-duper important reason known only to you.
